UGANDA : Will Falcons Have Enough to Overcome 'Power'?

  • With the first round of the Airtel National Basketball league coming to an end this weekend, there couldn't be a better way to draw the curtains than a fixture against the two most successful basketball teams in the country; Blue Cube Falcons and Dmark Power. The pair have won the title six and four times respectively and the contest will go a long way to determine whether Falcons, who missed last season's playoffs, are title contenders.
In many ways, this is Falcons' shot at redemption after recent losses to Warriors and KIU Titans. So, a go at Power will certainly make up for those two defeats. Statistically Falcons don't look bad; eight wins and two loses is a decent record and coach Tony Oluka is content.
"I'm okay with how we have played so far and the players are starting to get the formations that I want to use," he says.
Falcons' training sessions for the past two weeks at Makerere Main Ground have been about how to stop Power's running game. Oluka believes playing a 1-3-1 defense is the best way to stop Power because with such a strategy there will be someone playing defence on whoever is bringing down the ball there by killing Power's transition.
Already their four-game winning streak shows they are mastering the tactic. They had an easy time seeing off Nkumba Marines last Sunday 80-44. Julius Lutwama will be the one poised to play the role of stopping the ball and needs to bring his 'A' game for this one.
Falcons also stand another advantage because Power is weary after struggling to register their ninth win against Victoria University Heaters, who they beat 69-55 on Wednesday evening. But Power is not a team one can undermine because such epic like tonight's are fixtures they live for.
They love proving to their fans that they are two time defending champions. Their strategy is still the same; run at your opponent relentlessly and with the bragging rights of finishing top of the table if they win the fixture, in a way you can expect them to give it their all.

After having a rocky start to their season last year, Falcons club chairman, Denis Mbidde said they could get over the poor start to the season.
However, it did not go well all season as Falcons missed out on the playoffs for the first time and were rather involved in relegation battles.
Early this season, Mbidde played down Falcons title ambitions.
He said, "we dont expect to win the title this season".
The expectations may be have to change with the most successful club in the local game sitting third, below last years finalists in the top division.
Falcons (8-2) return to YMCA this evenning to face off DMark Power in the Airtel National Basketball League as the two teams complete their first round schedule.
Power (9-1) go into this game off a 69-55 win against Heaters on Wednesday.
Isaac Lugudde and Collin Mukiza scored 11 points each as most players were on court under 20 minutes.
Joseph Ikong (family issues) and Isaac Afidra sat out. "The beauty of our team is that we are deep" Isaac Lugudde said.
However, against Falcons, Ikong will be missed on both ends of the floor.
Falcons have won the last four games behind big performances from Ameny, Omony, Elungat and Katerega. "We respect our opponents. On any given night any one can lose but we just have to ensure that it is not 'any given night'.
We have trained for victory and we are all ready" Power's guard, Lugudde told Kawowo Sports.

UGANDA : Falcons rehearse for Power in style

    By Charles Mutebi
Steven Omony and the Falcons set the stage for their heavyweight clash with D’Mark Power on Friday with a fourth straight victory in the Airtel National men’s top Basketball League at the YMCA on Sunday.
The Falcons thumped the reeling Nkumba Marines 80-44, with Omony nailing a game-high 17 points. Peter Elungat and Julius Lutwama, who was facing Nkumba for the first time since leaving the club at the start of the season, added 12 and 11 points respectively for the Falcons.
A key factor in the Falcons winning run has been their strong start to games and they didn’t spare Nkumba, beating them 22-8 in the first quarter and 25-7 in the second. Consequently, the second half was a just procession, even though the Marines improved on both ends of the floor, thanks to Danson Ngati, 17pts, and Wilson Otweyo, 11.
With eight wins, two defeats and a competitive roaster, the Falcons are in good shape to face their arch-rivals and two-time defending champions Power in the last game of first round. In others words, expect a contest worthy of the richest rivalry in local basketball.
Meanwhile, the KIU Titans recorded their ninth victory in 11 league games with a 64-44 victory over newly-promoted Rez Life.

KENYA : Defending Champions CO-OP Bank terrorized

Updated on 24/06/12 | By BRIAN AYIEKO

The 2011 KBF champions CO-OP bank over the weekend failed to shine as they were dimmed by University of Nairobi side Terror 63-55 at the Nyayo Gymnasium.

The defending champions’ coach Cary Odhiambo was a disappointed after the loss blaming his team’s loss to complacency especially when facing the so called ‘smaller teams’; “When facing teams that are weaker than us on paper there is an attitude that crops up and the players lose focus. In the 3rd quarter we played nothing. I will have to work a lot on our mental strength to deal with this before our next match.”

Coop Bank commenced the match with a stronger display winning the first quarter 16-08 but they could not hold on to the early lead allowing the students to narrow the gap losing 14-15.

NIGERIA : African Basketball - Aderemi Hopeful on First Deepwater

  • Coach of First Bank, Adewunmi Aderemi has assured the team's supporters of a formidable squad that could compete with the rest of Africa when the FIBA Africa club tourney gets underway later this year.
A fortnight ago, First Deepwater basketball club of Ekiti won the country's women basketball league by retaining the Zenith Bank Women's league title for the third straight season despite their 70-76 points loss to former champion, First Bank basketball club at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium Lagos.
For the coach of the first Bank team, the just concluded Zenith Bank Women Basketball League was an eye opener for them to do work harder ahead of the continental tourney.
"It was indeed a difficult season with a lot of improvement from various teams. First Deepwater has shown consistency over the years compared to my side that is in transition but I'm optimistic that we will come out good in a short time," Aderemi said.
He added that "as the defending champions (First Deep Water), they were able to keep together most of their players and I think their coach brought his experience to bear on the results.
" I had in my squad, new and young players with little of experiences. Also our preparation towards the competition was a bit poor as we did not do much work in the first and second phase of the competition which cost us the title.
Now that we have seen our mistakes, we will do our best to rectify them and prepare well ahead of the continental tourney".

NIGERIA : D'Tigers Taste Greek, South American Action for London Games

National male basketball team D'Tigers are continuing the London Olympic Games qualification build up in the United States in a four- nation tournament in Houston with nail-biting games against national teams of Greece, Brazil, and New Zealand from June 25-30.
The Olympic qualifiers come up July 2-8 in Caracas, against Venezuela, and Lithuania for the Group-B sole ticket to the Olympics. The team, in search of a first ever Olympic Games games appearance, had earlier successfully concluded a tour of China where they took on several top clubs like Fujian Quanzhou Bank basketball club, Shanxi Zhongyu basketball club and Shanxi Zhongyu basketball club. Done with playing club-sides, D'Tigers took on the national team of Great Britain in the U.S, although details of results were not readily available.
The team will head to Caracas,Venezuela for the qualifiers after concluding the four-nation tourney, according to the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF, which has also described the trips as successful and revealing.
Few stakeholders give Nigeria a chance to make it to the Games giving the rich and rewarding background of both Venezuela and Lithuania in South America and the world. NBBF sources however say they are not ruling out surprises from the Nigerian team, given that the team is composed of players with experience who have vowed to bring smiles to the faces of their fellow countrymen and women.

The champions edged their biggest rivals for the crown 51-46 at YMCA court as the two giants wrapped their first round quotas on Friday. The two still are the best bets for the finals but in case KCC earn a repeat date to avenge the 4-0 series loss last year, this result posed questions.
Coach Timothy Odeke must find answers to reigning MVP Purity Adhiambo. The centre led UCU, scoring with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
KCC have definitely closed the gap after beating their rivals twice during the inter-cities earlier this year.
Martha Soigi dropped a game-high 17 points and 15 rebounds, matching UCU for size, but the weapons need to be spread further. The closely contested game started with a 9-all tie after the first period before KCC took charge by taking the next 17-11.

TANZANIA : Tight race for RBA League title

    Brown Msyani
    The Citizen Correspondent
Dar es Salaam. The battle for the RBA League crown is now a two-horse race between Savio and ABC.Savio underlined their quest for the title and the jackpot that goes with it at the weekend when they stretched their unbeaten run to 17 games.

Sylvain Yunzu had six rebounds, five blocks and buried 17 baskets to lead his team to a 69-57 victory over former champions Pazi at the Don Bosco Youth Centre courts on Sunday. The win took Savio to the summit of the table with 34 points followed closely by JKT who have so far accumulated 32 points.
Last year’s finalists ABC occupy the third spot (30) and with three quarters of the matches played, they are still considered as big challengers for the prestigious title. In Sunday’s game, Henry Mwinuka of Savio also had a day to remember after notching 12 points and eight clever assists.

Pazi shooting guards Daniel Muya and Denis Chibura worked tirelessly upfront, but their 13 and seven points respectively could not save the team from falling to Savio.Savio went to the courts brimming with confidence considering their imperious form, but could not outplay their opponents in the first quarter. They won 15-14.The League leaders returned to the second quarter looking stronger and troubled Pazi with quick but accurate passes to take a deserved 20-14 lead, thus making the scoreboard read 35-28 in their favour.

After the recess, Pazi came with all guns blazing and peppered the Savio area to cut the deficit with a 17-11 win.
Sensing the danger of staining their record, Savio started the fourth quarter fiercely and dashed whatever hopes Pazi had of overturning the score after winning 23-11.
Speaking after the match, Savio head coach Dassy Makula showered praise on his players for their mental strength and expressed hopes of finishing the League without losing a match.

“It was a tough game, but my players coped very well with the pressure from Pazi and we won the match. With this kind of spirit, I am optimistic that we will finish the League unbeaten,” Makula said. The coach also lauded Pazi players for displaying some sublime basketball skills.
Another game on the same day saw Oilers humiliate Magone 75-45 with merciless Lusajo Samweli hitting 22 points followed by teammate Evans Davids who scored 15 points.

Coach Nenad Amanovic (C) talks to his players during time-out during the 2010 Zone V qualifiers also held in Kigali, which was won by Egypt. The New Times / File.
The national U-18 men and women national basketball teams are scheduled to tour Bujumbura next week as they continue preparations for the forthcoming Zone Five U-18 qualifiers due July 17-22 in Kigali.
The teams will play in the Great Lakes regional basketball tournament that is expected to feature teams from Burundi and DRC.
According to Rwanda basketball federation president Desire Mugwiza, Rwanda will be using the tournament to gauge coach Nenad Amanovic’s players before the Zone V qualifiers.
“Initially APR was the invited team for the tournament but since they were not prepared, we requested the organisers to allow us send our junior teams which was given the green light.
“We want the players, who have been training for the last few weeks to test themselves against better and experienced opposition,” Mugwiza told this paper yesterday.
Meanwhile, the national basketball federation has received a timely boost from the Ministry of Sports and Culture that will provide Rwf120m for the organization of the competition
The week-long competition will attract six teams which include Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sudan and Ethiopia.

The men’s team will be bolstered by foreign based players who jet in next month and they include: Adronis Rwabigwi, Ngenzi Eric, Manzi Danny, Karenzi Ronald, Twagirayezu Patrice, Ishimwe Norbert, Rutare Jonathan, and Shyaka Scifon.

LIBERIA : Basketball In US$49,000 Hunt, Appeal to Chief Patron of Sports, Others

Partial view of some of the U-18 players during the press conferencePartial view of some of the U-18 players during the press conference
The President of the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA), Rufus Anderson, in a poignant tone, has appealed to Liberia’s Chief Patron of Sports, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, and other meaningful basketball enthusiasts as well as business institutions to rescue the LBA from fines and the missing of technical assistance from the Federation International Basketball Association (FIBA)-Afrique.

The LBA boss said Liberia failure to honor the FIBA U-8 championship qualifier in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire which kick-off Saturday, June 23, 2012, will taint the image of the country in the ‘Globe of Basketball.’
Mr. Anderson disclosed that the total cost for the entire trip including fines (penalties) for the country failure to honor past regional basketball tournament, is US$49,000.
The basketball boss divulged that all efforts for the intervention of the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL), Cellcom, Sime Darby-Liberia, Chevron amongst other companies to rescue basketball from ignominy, which is not a “political sports” proved futile.
“The SOS call comes at a time when the U—18 national Basketball team is expected to travel to the Ivory Coast to honor the African version of the FIBA U—18 championship qualifier in Ivory Coast.
“We are appealing to Chief Patron of Sports President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, other meaningful basketball enthusiasts as well as business institutions to come to our aid to avoid being fine and risk losing technical and logistical support,” Mr. Anderson stated.
Meanwhile, fans and stakeholders have urged the Government as well as basketball enthusiasts and concessional companies to help the U-18 basketball team travel and participate in the regional tournament. They argued that basketball, which is Liberia’s second most popular sports, should be supported; to encourage the over 50,000 youths are actively engage in the game.
The fans and stakeholders intoned that failure of Liberia participation in the tournament signified that indeed football is truly a “political sports,” which can therefore only be supported, while the other sports are insignificant and those who involved are as well insignificant to the over 3.5 million population.

LESOTHO : Roma to host basketball extravaganza

    By Nthako Majoro

MASERU-Eight basketball teams are expected to take part in a one-day competition dubbed Money Tournament scheduled for Roma on June 2.

According to the Lesotho Basketball Association spokesperson, Ratšolo Molupe, one of the teams to battle -it -out at the competition is from Bloemfontein, South Africa while the rest are local.
“We are expecting eight teams, with one coming from Bloemfontein by the name of Alumni Basketball Club. The seven local sides are KTA All Stars, Shines, LP, LUCT, Bashana ba heso, Roma Boys and the hosts, Rovers,” said Molupe.
The tournament, Molupe added, seeks to ensure there is basketball activity in the country at a time there are no regular tournamnts.
“This competition can be hosted any time when there are no basketball events, like now,” he said, adding the competition would also serve as a warm-up event ahead of the winter tournament, set for the end of June or early July.
According to Molupe, the presence of the Alumni Basketball Club would be very crucial for local teams.
“Alumni are a very good team. They have come all the way from Bloemfontein to win our Independence Tournament three times so far, and that indeed, shows how organised they are compared to our teams here at home,” he said, further revealing the LBA national league would begin immediately after the Independence Tournament in October.

UGANDA : KIU must show depth

In basketball, players are required to run from one end of the floor on every transition. For starters, the transition must not exceed 24 seconds. That implies that players are bound to get tired. So a coach is allowed to use 12 players, who can be rotated depending on the game plan and how their legs and lungs cope across the four quarters.
And the coach cannot have all players on court in a game. Most actually opt for a seven or eight-man rotation and at best, 10 get to play. Seeing Nimrod Kaboha, KIU Titans coach, overlook this basic player rotation over the years, is utterly disturbing. Last Sunday epitomised the rigidity that he faces in what could be a definitive season for the Kansanga-based side.
As they lost to 61-51 to Warriors in overtime, Kaboha’s lack of rotation was laid bare. Guard Salim Ali, the talisman, played the entire game until he fouled out during the five extra minutes. The teams were tied 52-up after four quarters. The Kenyan was visibly tired. Sooner, Brian Wati and Moses Olobo joined Ali. KIU lost the game because of the stinginess of Kaboha. This is not meant to take anything away from what Warriors did that day. Kaboha is arguably the best defensive coach here and credit to him for that. He managed to double up basketball and football so well. However, in his basketball days, there was no 24-second clock as it’s only been used here for the past few seasons. His fantastic job of coaching the university side has always involved only seven players with eight being a luxury before. The ambitions of KIU have shot up from the occasional playoff appearance to title contenders, at least with the roster they have built.
Sadly, they are not yet utilising their depth. Collins Omondi, Ali’s understudy, only gets to play when the starting point guard’s fingers feel sore. Forward Michael Makiadi went scoreless until overtime, the excuse being nine rebounds. Francis Kasekende, one of the best perimeter shooters, barely gets time on court. His 15 points against Warriors is his best return in 11 games.
Their main offensive weapon Abraham Juma, before Richard Omondi, Ali, Kasekende and Makiadi were signed, spends more games bench warming. When KIU do make the playoffs, champions DMark Power and Warriors will be smarter. The reasons will be resting, rhythm and executing plays. Playoffs normally bring two games in 48 hours and Kaboha has his work cut out.

    In Summary
Backed by two victories over UCU in the inter-cities tournament earlier this year, KCC coach Timothy Odeke is positive.

Little has changed since last year’s women’s Airtel National Bsaketball finals in which UCU Lady Canons swept KCC Leopards 4-0.
It was so anti-climatic that few memories were kept. However, there is no hiding that the two remain the two strongest teams here.
Both have not lost a game this season and share identical winning streaks of 11 games ahead of their clash at YMCA court today.

Backed by two victories over UCU in the inter-cities tournament earlier this year, KCC coach Timothy Odeke is positive. “I think we have improved very much from last year. Tremedous,” Odeke said. He has new adversary in Boniface Okello, who replaced Dale Sculy as coach.
UCU’s ‘big men’ Peace Proscovia and Purity Adhiambo, who would go on to win the MVP title, pounded KCC last year. Martha Soigi and Carol Badaru offered resistance without much support against the athleticism of Adhiambo and ran out of lungs.
Muhay Namuwaya and Jackie Basemera will offer support. “When they beat us, they were better technically and better conditioned,” Odeke noted. Kenyan Adhaimbo is still as destructive as during her debut season last year. Her last game ended in 17 points and 13 rebounds to beat minnows Gladiators 27-24.
The front court is tilting on a knife edge. In case former MVP Maureen Amoding sits out again for UCU like she has done so many times during the regular season, the back court will be balanced too.
In Flavia Oketcho, KCC still possess a lethal perimeter shooter. She helped UCU win their first league title back in 2008. In the day’s last game, Victoria University Heaters take on Ndejje University Angels.
Meanwhile, former champions Rhino continued their push for a return to the topflight with an 81-70 Kings on Wednesday night. TLC beat Air Force 63-56 in the men’s Third Division

ANGOLA : Edson Ndoniema and Jorge Tati Ousted From National Basketball Team

The small forwards Edson Ndoniema and Jorge Tati were ousted from the Angolan national senior males basketball team, who are preparing their participation in the pre-Olympic tournament, set for 2-8 July in Caracas city in Venezuela.
This was said to Angop on Monday by the secretary general of the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB), Tony Sofrimento.
Check the summoned players: Leonel Paulo, Armando Costa, Kikas Gomes, Felizardo Ambrósio, Carlos Morais, Paulo Barros, Roberto Fortes, Divaldo Mbunga, Paulo Santana, Eduardo Mingas, Milton Barros, Olímpio Cipriano and Valdelicio Joaquim.
The squad, coached by the Angolan José Carlos Guimarães, will leave for Venezuela on 25 June.

    ZIMBABWE : Girls High Triumph

  • Girls High School continued with their dominance in basketball when they clinched the Under-16 title on Saturday.
The tournament was held at Queen Elizabeth and attracted teams from 26 schools.
However, the day belonged to Girls High as they proved to be too good for their opponents.
They beat Mufakose 2 18-12 in the finals. Earlier on they had dismissed Zengeza 2 13-2 in the semi-finals.
Last week they won the Under-14 tournament, which saw them earning a ticket to represent the province at the inter-provincial championships, set for Mutare next month.
Girls High had earlier on emerged the winners in the group stages when they beat Mufakose 1 High 21-2.
They went on to beat Mufakose 2 21-2 before they overpowered Highfield 24-0.
Girls High sports director, Miriam Moyo, attributed their success to their sound development programme.
"We actually expected the win because five of our girls were part of the team select that went to the national finals last year and brought gold, so it was a straight win.
"It simply means that we have now achieved our goal of building our teams from grassroots, it is beginning to pay dividends," said Moyo.
Moyo some of their players will be part of the Under-16 team that will represent the province at the inter-provincials.
"Seven of players have been selected into the provincial squad that is going to participate in the inter-provincial because for the Under-16 they go as a select team unlike in the Under-14 where the winners represent the province."
Kuwadzana High finished in third place.

KENYA : KCA Thump Jomo Kenyatta in NBA League

KENYA College of Accountancy (KCA) University thumped Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology (Jkuat) 50-26 in a Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA) league match at Railways Club. Jayne Mugwanga was the top scorer with 11 points. She was power behind KCA's 26-21 win over Strathmore University 26-21.
The other women's show saw Barclays Bank of Kenya nip Kenya Polytechnic University 23-19 as Adeline Munguti bagged 10 points. In the men's matches, Reagan Basweti poured in 22 points to lead Old Pirates to a 61-55 win over Multi Media University (MMU).Nick Oloo hit 21 as JKUAT thumped Kind Deaf 79-24. MOZAMBIQUE : Salè : "We are growing "

    Deolinda Ngulela
    Deolinda NGULELA (MOZ)
MOZ - Salé: 'We're growing in confidence'
LISBON (FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women) - The Mozambique national side remains upbeat about its chances in the forthcoming FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women (OQTW) despite a preparation period that recently saw them fall to hosts Portugal in a friendly.
The home side won the game, 72-66, but Mozambique's players weren't discouraged as they had only touched down from their flight from Maputo just a few hours before tip-off.

In the contest played in Rio Maior, near Lisbon, Deolinda Ngulela, Anabela Cossa and Leia "Tanucha" Dongue combined to scored 37 points, more than the rest of the team, as they went to the break with a 32-31 lead.
Nasir Salé, the Mozambique coach, said to FIBA.com: "We are growing in confidence and improving some aspects of our game.
"My players showed great determination, despite the short break as we had just arrived from Maputo.
"We controlled our possession and turned the ball over fewer times than Portugal did."
Mozambique had 11 turnovers in the game.
Since that game, Mozambique have continued their preparations with games and workouts against Algés e Dafundo, a historic club based on the outskirts of Lisbon.
At the OQTW in Ankara, which gets underway 25 June, Mozambique are in Group C with Croatia and Korea.
They will be battling for one of the five places available for the Olympic Games.
Mozambique will travel from Lisbon to Ankara on 23 June and two days later will face the Croatians.
"Both teams are good sides and we are aware that it won't be an easy task coming up against either of them," Salé said.
"Our objective is to play well, dignify our beloved Mozambique, and I do not think we are much different to the other teams in terms of goals in this tournament."
Clarisse Machanguana, the only European-based player and the one with the most experience in the group, has joined the team in the Portuguese capital.

KENYA : Tragedy touches women’s basketball in Kenya

Tragedy touches women’s basketball in Kenya
NEWCASTLE (Paul Nilsen’s Women’s Basketball Worldwide) - It’s ever so easy to get caught up in the excitement of a summer which boasts so many fascinating and exciting tournaments or perhaps to focus far too closely on the big names and elite level teams around the globe.
However, just occasionally, it probably does us all some good to actually reflect on how lucky we are to have this wonderful game and close-knit women’s basketball family as part of our lives.
Even more so when you find out about the devastating death of a young female baller who loved the sport so very much but will sadly never get to bounce another ball or get to watch any big tournaments.

I never knew Diana Akinyi but when reading about her death via Brian Ayieko at the excellent www.basket-in-africa.blogspot.co.uk, it was quite emotional to think of just how sad the circumstances were and the impact this has had on the entire basketball community in Kenya.

In what has since been dubbed the ‘Mlolongo Tragedy’, a building collapsed just over a week ago in Kenya and while 15 people survived after sustaining serious injuries, Akinyi was unfortunately one of four people who were killed in the incident.
She had previously played her basketball in the MTN Basketball League in Uganda with Kampala International University before returning home to play for Kenya Polytechnic or simply ‘The Poly’ as the team is affectionately known.
Unsurprisingly, an emotional Victor Mak’Osewe who is head coach of the team told michezoafrika.com that Akinyi would be sorely missed.
“She was one of the best defensive players and we shall really miss her,” he said
“She was full of life, a leader and an experienced girl in the team.
“Her sudden death is a big blow not only to our team but to the Kenya Basketball family,” Mak'Osewe added.
The other reason this is a tragedy striking at the very heart of the basketball community is that her brother Davidson Olouch is also a baller who plays in the Kenyan capital.
I had hoped when I wrote only a few weeks ago about Cameroon guard Ramses Lonlack and the camaraderie which exists between African basketball nations that it wouldn’t be re-enforced in this very painful context.
This tragic loss isn’t just about Kenyan or African basketball. It’s one which certainly won't go unrecognised by the women's basketball family right around the globe – of that you can be absolutely certain.
Therefore I would just like to end this short but hopefully thought provoking column by offering Davidson and his family my sincere condolences and by adding that I hope basketball can in some part give him the comfort and strength to get through losing his sister who shared his passion for the sport.

    KIU Ranger 72 Nabisunsa 36
Malinga was helped by Cyrus Kiviri and Ronnie Kasewu, who contributed 15 points each in a tight and exciting fight involving the top clubs that gave fans more reasons to flock to Wandegeya and enjoy such exciting games.
KIU Titans were boosted by Salim Ali and Francis Kasekende, who also scored 15 points each in a low scoring game coupled by a number of turn overs from the university side and the cheap give away of balls, brought about by uncoordinated passes.
They however got a consolation when their women team beat Nabisunsa 72-36 in the women competition.

Updated on 19/06/12 | By BRIAN AYIEKO

KENYA : Kenya Veterans basketball team beats Burundi

Updated on 16/06/12 | By BRIAN AYIEKO

The Kenya Veterans team beat their Burundi counterparts 50 -42 in an exciting match that was played at the Nyayo Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Ken Ondiek the Kenyan captain was the top scorer with 13 points while Nairobi Basketball Association League chairman Ronny Owino had 10 points together with Job Munene. Burundi’s Mategeko Nibaratua had 10 points.
The Kenyan team started off strongly in the first quarter and they managed to get 16 points against Burundi’s 8 points. In the second quarter Burundi managed to improve their game in the second quarter but Kenya was still the better side and the quarter ended 15 -10 in favor of the home side to put the total points 31- 18 at half time.

In the third quarter Burundi showed they were in for serious business and they trounced Kenya 12 points to 6 points. The fourth quarter saw a tight showdown between the two teams and the home side managed to take the day when they emerged victorious at 13 -12.

Speaking to michezoafrika.com Ken Ondiek was delighted by the win despite the narrow margin saying this is a great start to a bright future where the region will be united through basketball,
A meeting was scheduled after the game to chart the way forward for the initiative and Ondiek was optimistic that they would managed to spread the initiative to the rest of East Africa, “At the meeting we will discuss how we can involve other countries like Uganda, Tanzania and hopefully transform it to a tournament.”

UGANDA : Gutsy KIU present huge challenge for Warriors

KIU Titans blew their own cover by beating Airtel National Basketball League champions DMark Power 71-67 last SundayA similar performance is needed against Warriors, finalists in each of the last three seasons, to cement KIU’s credentials as title contenders.
The victory over Power might just be the platform KIU can build upon. However, their major strength lies elsewhere – defence.
This is among the primary ethos of coach Nimrod Kaboha. Enroute a 7-1 start to the season, KIU have let in 398 points, over 100 less than Falcons, the next best thing.
That has not come at the expense of execution on offense. Kenyan guard Salim Ali is coming into his element after a slow start since joining from Heaters.
He had 17 and nine rebounds last Sunday. Ali’s former teammate at Heaters, Michael Makiadi, also found his range for 12 points and 10 boards.
Forward Richard Omondi, who defended guard Ben Komakech, a two-time MVP, might be asked to do the same against either Ronnie Kasewu or Cyrus Kiviri.“One game at a time,” said Omondi, perhaps relishing the task. The injury to Ivan Enabu and less minutes for Jude Ochen has heralded Kiviri into the spotlight.
The off-season signing from Ndejje scored a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds to beat UCU Canons 78-64 and bury the narrow 71-68 loss to Power.
Some fans even found the audacity to forget Ivan, arguably the most cheered player locally. “Who needs Enabu? Cyrus Cyrus…,” a section of the fans chanted.
“This is my best game on the big stage. We were so determined not to lose after the Power result,” Kiviri, wearing a bright smile, said.
Doing the same every week is the challenge now. Centre Sam Gombya remains the wall between opposing teams and the Warriors’ hoop.
Gombya’s 19 points and 18 rebounds enabled them out-rebound UCU 48-34. Omondi, Brian Wati, Makiadi and Moses Olobo will pose bigger questions than UCU.
