Reigning Nigeria women’s basketball league Most Valuable Player, MVP, and highest scorer award winner, Nkechi Akashili, who plays for the First Deepwater basketball club, has dedicated the awards to her teammates and coaches of the team.
The soft-spoken combo guard disclosed this to P.M.Sports after her team won this year’s edition of Zenith Bank sponsored Nigeria’s women’s basketball league despite their lost to arch rivals, First Bank basketball club in the last match played last weeked.
Akashili said she is delighted to have won both awards at the end of a hectic season that saw them played at three different venues, Kaduna, Ilorin and Lagos, where she helped her team to a third straight title.
“I am so happy that I won two awards again this season and I must thank my teammates and coaches who believe in my ability to lead our team quest for the women league title. I am therefore dedicating this awards to all of them and promised to continue the good run during the FIBA Africa Zone-3 qualifiers coming up in Liberia,” the 10th All Africa Games Bronze Medallist concluded.
Akashili scored a whopping 164 points at the final phase of the league to emerge the top scorer and went on to clinch the prestigious individual awards at the championship.
She promised to continue from where the team stopped in the Nigerian league as they are set to take on other clubs from the FIBA Africa Zone-3 during the qualifiers in Monrovia, Liberia later in the year.
