KENYA : St. Mary’s dribble their way into second round

Story by SAMMY KITULA
Publication Date: 2/28/2008

Hosts St. Mary’s School scored a 78-45 win over Kitisuru High to romp into the second round of the Nairobi Secondary Schools Sports Association’s boys’ basketball league.

This was just a formality match for the winners who have already made it to the next round in the league. But still, they had little mercy for the visitors who have lost both matches against St. Mary’s.

Exploit weaknesses

Kitisuru wanted to earn revenge for their 39-36 loss in the first meeting as the first two minutes of the game saw the scoreboard go blank with both teams trying to exploit the weaknesses and flaws of the other.

It was when Marvin Gitungo of St. Mary’s, who was the game’s top scorer with 26 points, broke the jinx with a successful lay-up, stopping all mind games.

Benson Kamau of Kitisuru combined talent and energy to make a quick reply with a fast drive that caught the opponents napping. He managed 18 points for his side.

“After losing our last game to Jaffery Academy, we were determined not to go the same route with Kitisuru.

“We wanted to collect maximum points from this match, which we did,” said St. Mary’s coach, David Waigwa.

Pace picked up

With a basket each, the game turned into a total war as the pace picked up.

Gitungo was called to duty as he ran the show for the hosts with his ball artistry. In the end of the first half, the 2004 Provincial champions, St. Mary’s were leading 17-7.

“It took us sometime before we found our form of play, but after settling down, we were at our best,” said Gitungo.

In the second quarter, the hosts - through Abraham Kimeu and Masuud Issa - came harsh on their opponents to relentlessly port baskets from three pointers, to brilliant lay ups that culminated from well calculated passes and daredevil drives. Kimeu had 24 points while

Issa added 11 more points.

A spirited combination of Gitungo, Issa and Ricky Muhoro, ensured that they won most of their balls in their court, made successful drives into the opponent’s territory and provided entertaining dummies in the process to seal the quarter 18-10.

Determined to spoil their opponent’s victory party, Kitisuru came out strongly in the third quarter, taking full control of the play.

They returned with vengeance in both unleashing baskets and holding back their rivals.

Joseph Musau and Cliff Gatonye of Kitisuru played a pivotal role in ensuring that they were back in contention.

With the aid of George Mwaniki, they grabbed 12 points, while their rivals managed only 10 in the low-scoring quarter.

Musau had 10 points, while both Gatonye and Mwaniki managed eight apiece for the visitors.

The last quarter saw the hosts assume the driving seat with Kimeu sinking three successive three-pointers within a span of five minutes. This helped in increasing the disparity, that enabled St. Mary’s add 33 to Kitisuru’s 16.

“I expected a much better game from my team. I’m disappointed with our inability to break the Saint’s defence.

“We will see where we went wrong but I must congratulate our opponents for their victory,” said Kitisuru’s coach, John Otieno.

St. Mary’s have now been grouped in a tough group that has five-time national champions, St. Austin’s, 2005 Provincial winners Aquinas High School and Eastleigh High School.

KENYA : 16 Through to Second Round of City Contest

by Sammy Kitula
Nairobi

Sixteen teams have qualified for the second round of the Nairobi Secondary Schools boys' basketball league expected to start Thursday at the respective schools.

Defending champions St. Austin's' 92-11 whipping of Sunshine High School last week ensured they topped their pool to set up an early meeting with 2006 winners Jaffery Academy in the coming round.
Jaffrey, who have been seeded top in the pre-quarters round, had also won all their matches in the preliminaries.
Others who have secured tickets for the second round include St. Mary's School, St. Theresa's Secondary, Aquinas High, Malezi High, Kenya Muslim Secondary and Highway Secondary.
Starehe Boys Centre, Upper Hill, Moi Forces Academy, Pumwani Secondary, Dagoretti High, Strathmore, Lenana and Nairobi School complete the list.
Lenana's 'Rockers' romped into the second round of the basketball league after whipping a hapless Uhuru High School 67-15 in a one-sided match last Friday.
Lenana led 19-0 in the first quarter as Maxwell Njaramba, Peter Maina and Riaz Kiprotich ran riot in Uhuru's half.
The rout continued in the second and third quarters, with Uhuru managing nine points in the two quarters as the Rockers extended their score line to 55.
In the last quarter, Lenana coach, Raymond Kinyua, brought in his second string side which managed 12 points as Uhuru added six baskets to their tally.
Samuel Ogutu impressed in the relatively inexperienced Uhuru team, scoring a remarkable three-pointer in the last quarter.
Kinyua said that the team had been improving gradually after winning all their matches in Pool E despite their training being hampered by the poll violence.
"We couldn't manage to hold our annual Founders Tournament and friendly matches because of the chaos. In the past, this has given our players enough exposure before the league starts. Nonetheless, we have a team that can clinch the Nairobi title this year," he added.

Determined Pumwani

In other matches, Dagoretti High School humbled Karengata 46-34 at home in a Group B to march to the second round.
In Pool F, Kenya Muslim had to endure a determined Pumwani High School, before beating them 41-38 at home.
Muslim overwhelmed Pumwani's defence in the dying minutes of the tight contest.
Most of the first round matches were hampered as many schools were on half-term breaks.
But NSSSA basketball secretary Peter Manundu says that the second round will run smoothly as many of the city schools are back from the breaks.
"We were set back by (the break) issue, but as we begin round two (of the league), we expect it to be smooth," he said.

Quarter-finals

The second round involving 16 teams will run until March 6. The quarter-finals are set for March 8, semi-finals on March 15, while the play-offs and finals will be held on March 29.
Winners of the Nairobi tournament will represent the province during the national championships from April 7 to 13 at Mang'u High School.
Manundu said venues for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final will be neutral and the participating teams shall be notified at a later date.
"Venues for knockout matches will be such that none of the qualifying teams will enjoy home advantage," he said.

TANZANIA : Chang'ombe Boys, UDSM in Super Cup Tie

Dar es Salaam based Chang'ombe Boys need an outright victory in today's clash against University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) so as to qualify for the semi-finals in the ongoing Kili Super Cup basketball championship.
The Chang' ombe Boys win will also ease pressure on holders JKT, who face elimination after losing one match and winning another in their group.
Should Chang' ombe Boys lose the clash, the team to progress to the semi-final will be decided by the number of points earned during the preliminaries. Savio from Group B have already won the semi-final berth after posting two wins and now await today's clash between Vijana and Oilers to conclude the last four pairings.
Dar es Salaam champions Vijana have a psychological advantage ahead of today's final clash against the Oilers.

"Everybody knew why we lost that final to the home team. We will set the record straight and show we are the best team in the region," said Ngunjiri, who wants this year's tournament be held in Bujumbura, Burundi, as earlier planned.

He said he plans to beef up his playing unit by three players whom he has identified before the training starts early next month.

Patrick Kamuntu scored a game-high 17 points as Cercle Sportif (CSK B) won the 2008 Nile Day Cup on Thursday.

With 20 seconds left and the score 49-48 in favor of CSK B, AGF missed four free throws to dent their chances of a late surge at Amahoro indoor courts.

Despite AGF claiming the third and fourth quarters 11-08, 12-11, CSK B's physical presence, superior ball handling and pace epitomized by Kamuntu gave them a 30-25 lead at half time which proved very decisive at the end of the day.

After being crowned champions, Emmanuel Rugumire, the National project coordinator for the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) commended both teams for putting up an outstanding performance.
"It was very close and exciting game," he acknowledged.

"The NBI theme for this year is 'the youth' so we saw it fit to stage such a tournament. We have started with basketball but we intend to expand in other sporting disciplines as well," Rugumire continued.

NIGERIA : Senator Laments State of B'Ball

Dayo Thomas
Abuja

A Senator, Usman Umar has condemned the neglect suffered by basketball despite the abundant talents in the country. He therefore urged stakeholders to invest in the development of the game.

Umar stated this at the inauguration of Premier Basketball Foundation (PBF), advocated support from both private and corporate organisations to assist basketball at the grassroots level.
He said: "Nigerians have started arriving when it comes to basketball sports, so itís an innovation for us to support government when it concerns basketball at grassroots level,"
He described the foundation as an innovation in the area of funding basketball in the country.

Responding, Mr Tijani Umar, president of PBF, said that the foundation would contribute to the growth and development of grassroots basketball through a private and effective avenue.
'This foundation will be an umbrella that will nurture kids in primary and secondary schools through our sustainable program, "so that a reservoir of talents can be created for the benefit of our national and international basketball engagements," he added. Tijani said the foundation would also provide a pedestal for young players to make a success of both academic and athletic pursuits.

UGANDA : Clubs Want MTN Money

by Sande Bashaija
Kampala

Kampala City Council (KCC) Leopards, Mogas Falcons and A-1 Challenge are up in arms against the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (Fuba) over prize money due to them for emerging victorious in last year's league.

KCC Leopards are the women's champions after beating A-1 Challenge while Falcons took the men's trophy. "I can't believe we are yet to receive our prize money yet the season is soon beginning. The money is ours but I wonder why they (Fuba) are not giving it to us," KCC treasurer Denis Karugaba told Daily Monitor yesterday.

According to Karugaba, league sponsors MTN released the money last month and there is no reason Fuba should be holding onto it.

The champions are entitled to Shs2m each and first runners-up Shs1m. Clubs argue they need the money to re-build their teams ahead of the 2008 league that gets underway in early April. "I have inquired about the money for some time now. But I won't give up because the club needs it," A-1 Challenge treasurer Ali Mavita said.

"Of course teams would use such money to bring in some recruits. I think Fuba has sincerely delayed," Falcons' Henry Malinga said. Fuba official Joe Burua says preparations are underway to handover the money to the clubs.

UGANDA : Rhino Not Yet Relegated

by Sande Bashaija
Kampala

CHARGiNG Rhino have not been relegated to the Second Division. The 1997 National Basketball League champions suffered a scare this week when it was reported in the press that they had been demoted to the lower division after finishing bottom third in the topflight last season.

But according to Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (Fuba) this is not true. Fuba rules and regulations state that at the end of every season the bottom two sides in each division are relegated and two promoted but with a provision of the technical committee making adjustments.

Fuba publicity secretary Joe Burua said the technical committee has suggested that three teams be relegated but no final decision has been made.
"They presented their suggestion to the executive on Monday. However they must have strong justification for such a rule to be amended. The recommendation has not been passed," Burua said.
But Rhino senior player David Kiberu believes it may be too late to reverse the relegation decision.
"If the technical committee has decided then we are gone. But I think it's ridiculous and can't understand why they are doing this at a time when we are preparing for the new season," Kiberu said yesterday.

Rhino have struggled in the past four years but were trying to rebuild their squad ahead of the new season and are eyeing former MVP Norman Blick.

NIGERIA : Premier Basketball Foundation Launched in Abuja

by Ismaila Umaru Lere

A journey of one thousand miles begins with a step. And something akin to a big stride in the direction of the development of basketball was taken in Abuja with the official launching of a grassroot aca-demy.

Amidst plaudits and high expectations, the Premier Bas-ketball Foundation was unveiled yesterday by Senator Usman Kibiya Umar, a former President of Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF.

While launching the foun-dation, Senator Umar lauded the efforts of its founders, who he described as his acolytes during his days at the helms of Nigerian basketball.

He therefore advised them to stand firm in their efforts towards the development of the game in the country.

"There are some people who for whatever reasons will try to undermine the progress and success of the foundation. You have to remain steadfast and focus to attain your set objecti-ves," he said.

The senator said he was elated when he saw the invi-tation for the event, adding that the foundation came at an auspicious time.

Also speaking at the occa-sion, the President of the foun-dation, Alhaji Tijjani Umar said the idea of the academy was borne out of the desire to contri-bute meaningfully and selflessly to the growth and development of the game.

"I believe that there is a commonality of view among all of us that there is an urgent need to work with kids in primary and secondary schools in order to develop and nurture them through sustainable program-mes, so that a reservoir of talent is created for the benefit of our future national and international engagements," he said, stres-sing that a private, efficient, accountable avenue is required in view of the obvious inability of our public sports institutions to invest tangibly in basketball over the past several years.

In his goodwill message, Brigadier General J.G. Yakubu, the special guest of honour, applauded the foundation for the valiant initiative, saying it was a step forward in the right direction.

But, he further warned that, "progress is not only about winning and organising compe-titions. Of course, we've been doing that all along. It's all about projects and programmes like this that will target the youth and help them develop their talent and grow into future stars."

He urged the students of the academy to maximise the opportunity at hand so as to actualise their dreams as future basketball players.

Similarly, Mr. Oliver Johnson, a veteran basketball coach, advised the youngsters to adhere to the principle of discipline and scholarship if they are to make a successful career in the hoop sport.

Already, the foundation has started assisting some of its young players with opportuni-ties to further their education abroad and also play at higher levels.

Sarah Imoubioh is one of the lucky ones pencilled down for a development programme in the United States of America.

She would soon proceed to the St. Anne's College in Virginia to pursue her education and harness her talent.
"I am grabbing this opportu-nity and I will work hard to actualise my dreams," says 16-year-old Imoubioh, who told Trustsports that she has been horning her basketball skills with the academy for over two years.

Also speaking to Trustsports, Colonel Saleh Bala, founder of One Deevers basketball team and a long-time supporter of the game said the sustainability of the programme is paramount.
"Without doubt this is a giant stride and I hope the foundation will continue to wax stronger for the benefit of the sport we all cherish," he intoned.

MOROCCO : Day 14 results

IRT's team scoring guard Mustapha Khalfi took charge with only two minute left in the game and hit 2 three-pointer to give his team the lead and the win against local rival FUS. IRT had to work hard for the victory, having been incomprehensively outplayed by FUS in the first half (37-16). FUS players showed much better tactical organisation on the court and IRT's coach Bouzidi had tried unsuccessfully many different defenses (m&m, zone, triangle & 2). IRT players were playing without desire and showed a worrying lack of aggressiveness in defense and lack of ideas in offense, which is still based only on individualities. But right after half time IRT came more and more into the game thanks to a simple and normal 1-2-2 zone press and the lack of experience of FUS young line up. FUS resisted to IRT comeback on the score thanks to Bangoura Mourlaye (18 points, 11 rebounds) but Tunisian player Marouane Kechrid (20 points) took the ball in crunch time and made the decisive baskets to tie the game 2:30 minutes remaining in the game. Then Mustapha Khalfi (19 points) netted is only 3 three-pointer shots of the game and sealed another victory for IRT (65-75).
Despite this lost the inexperienced young and hunger FUS players showed in general a high level of discipline in offense and good consistency in defense, and are promising good results to come.

MAS secured his second place after a home victory over WAC (91-82). The teams exchanged runs in the first half with WAC earning a 14-16 lead after 1Q before MAS players responded to take a 38-36 halftime lead. Things stayed the same until MAS switched to a 2-3 zone defense and created many problems to WAC players. When WAC's coach decided to set a box and one defense in order to stop Alpha Traore good shooting range, Matar M'baye appeared and enjoyed a terrific game topscoring with 24 points and 8 assists. WAC players tried to stop the fire with a terrible unorganised match-up zone defense where Aloui Brahim (4 out of 5 three-pointer) and Hjira's double double (14 points, 14 rebounds) found easily the way to the basket. Michel Lasme topscored for WAC with a strong 21 points performance but was not enough as he did not receive any help from his teammates.

Saturday's other result saw RCA edge past ASS 81-77 and KAC struggling for a win over MET 61-64. TSC recovered from last weeks defeats with a 97-69 strong victory over CMC.

UGANDA : Twist in rules as Rhinos are demoted

By Charles Mutebi

THE top and bottom three finishers in the three men’s national basketball league divisions in the 2007 league will be promoted and relegated respectively, instead of two as was expected.
The revelation was made by local basketball federation technical committee following their meeting on Tuesday at YMCA.
The decision implies that 1997 champions Charging Rhinos will be relegated for the first time to the second division, to be replaced by now promoted Gulu Hawks.
Committee member Joseph Manano said that the decision was in line with the rules and regulations.
“Our constitution stipulates that the technical committee will decide how many teams get promoted and relegated at the end of every season,” Manano explained.
He acknowledged that the decision was a sudden revision to the earlier messages that indicated that only two teams would go up and down.
But he promised that in the future, teams will know beforehand the full details of promotion and relegation.

MALAWI : PROBLEMS AFFECTING BASKETBALL IN MALAWI

Despite Malawi having alot of potential players who can improve basketball in Malawi,
it is still a dream to improve basketball in since most of the problems are not looked
into and dealt with.

A shortage of basketball courts is the major problem which affects basketball in Malawi.
Players have to travel long distances to find a basketball court. This affects them since
they reach at basketball courts already tired. Sometimes they do skip training days
because of fatigue.

The government of Malawi is also to be blamed for poor standards of basketball in Malawi.
The government only concentrate on funding football leaving basketball aside. Most of the leagues
do not continue due to a lack of funding. This causes a lot of players to not take basketball seriously
since they do not benefit from it.

Basketball can not develop without basketball coaches. This is the case in Malawi. Teams do
not have coaches instead they use their fellow players to coach them. This contributes to poor
standards of basketball since their fellow players cum coaches are not equiped with skills of coaching.

Medical aid is essential to all sporting activities. Most basketball players stop playing basketball for life
because when they are seriously injured on the court, there is no medical aid (first aid) to ease the situation.

For basketball to improve in Malawi, the above problems have to be looked into and dealt with immediately.
For example, in Angola there are many basketball courts, a lot of basketball coaches, plus the balls
are cheap. No wonder Angola is doing great in basketball.

KENYA : Jaffery's Beat St. Mary's for Second Win

By Sammy Kitula
Nairobi

Jaffery's Academy beat St Mary's School 65-27 to claim their second straight win in the ongoing Nairobi Secondary Schools Association boys' basketball league.

The first two minutes of the game saw the scoreboard go blank as both teams as the teams sized up each other. Collins Maiteri, who was the top scorer for Jaffery's Academy with 22, put the first points on the board with a drive and a successful lay up and all the mind games stopped and the contest started in earnest.

Abraham Kimeu replied for St Mary's with a quick drive that caught the opponents napping.

"We had started the match on the wrong footing, letting our opponents dictate the pace. But after the second quarter, we found our rhythm and controlled the proceedings," said Jaffery's coach, Gabriel Ingotsi.

With a basket each, the game turned into a total war as the pace picked up and the ball was in both courts within 20 seconds as each team sought to light up their part of the scoreboard. When the first quarter ended, Jaffery's Academy, last year's finalists in this league, were led 9-8.

"The first quarter was just mixed up and we needed to correct our mistakes very fast. We committed numerous turnovers, that were just unnecessary," said Jaffery's captain, Collins Maiteri. And true to their word, they changed strategy as they came down hard on their opponents in the second quarter relentlessly sinking baskets from outside the three-point arc and from brilliant lay ups, all coming from culminating from well calculated passes and drives.
A combination of Maiteri, Lenus Mbega and Billy Kamau ensured that Jaffery's won most of their balls in their court, made successful drives into the opponent's court and provided entertaining dummies to lead 21-10 at half time

Such was Jaffery's domination that they outscored St Mary's 20-3 in the third quarter. St Mary's fought back bravely in the final quarter sinking baskets and defending well. Abraham Kimeu was the top scorer with 12.

The strategy worked, but it was a matter of too little too late as they lost the quarter 24-14. St Mary's coach, David Waigwa, attributed his team's loss to the fact that it took a while before the players could get used to the court. "It took my players a while before they got used to the rims. Playing away from home isn't an easy task, but we promise them a hard time in the return match next week," he said.

ZONE Five will soon get down to serious business following the inauguration of a secretariat in Nairobi, Kenya.

President Morris Aluanga told FIBA in an interview that with an office complete with everything including a secretary, affairs for the region will now be conducted in a smooth environment. The offices are located at the Nyayo National Stadium.

"With the help of FIBA Africa, we have now opened a full fledged office where we will be able to run our affairs. It will now be serious business." noted Aluanga while thanking the continental body for funding the development.

Aluanga, who attended the FIBA Africa Central Board meeting in Cairo, said that this move will help co-ordinate the affairs of the region which he promises will see a lot more activities from this year.
"2008 will be a very busy year fro this Zone. We have lined up our activities in the Under 18 boys, Under 18 girls, Club Championships for both men and women and the elimination rounds for the Africa nations Cup in both categories." he disclosed.

NIGERIA : Zenith Female League gets new date

The Zenith Bank National Female League may not start February 23 as earlier tentatively endorsed by the stakeholders meeting between the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and the female club owners in Nigeria.

This follows a round table discussion held last week between the Nigerian Federation and the sponsors of Nigeria's flagship female championship, the Zenith Bank.
"The February 23 date was only tentative and that was clear from the start.
The teams agreed with that knowing fully well that a final date can only be certain after consultations with the sponsors.
The adjustment is only very minor and that was already adequately taken care of in the schedule for the season.
And this will be a simple adjustment of about two weeks or thereabout," the Technical Director of the NBBF Dr. Adamu Ahmed told FIBA.
By the adjustment, the league will take off by about the second week of March in the earlier advertised venues.
Enugu, Jos, Abuja and Lagos will host the four legs of the league.
The Federation said that the consultations with Zenith Bank were still on and has been quite fruitful as the season prepares to play in the fourth consecutive season.
"We have made our own submission and they are looking at it and we believe that the end of the day we'll all settle for something that will be quite beneficial to the female players and the Nigerian basketball in general," Adamu said.
When the league starts next month it will take in two more teams as it expands to 10 from the 8 that featured in the last season.
First Bank ladies nicknamed Elephant Girls are the defending champions while Dolphins finished as runners up last term.
There are also Sunshine Queens, Nigeria Customs, Nigeria Immigrations, AHIP, Delta Force and Dodan Amazons.

by Philip Onyango
Nairobi

Makupa Lakers men and Mombasa Sports Club women stayed on course for the Kwale Open clubs category titles with easy victories as the tournament entered final stages at Matuga Girls High School and Waa Boys High school Sunday.

Lakers made mince meat of Shanzu Teachers College hitting them 35-14, and went ahead to beat Buxton Hawks and Oceaners 41-18 and 21-14 respectively in matches which were played at Waa Boys.

Mombasa Sports Club women on the other hand defeated Waa Girls 77-07 and Matuga Girls 53-06 in other matches played at Matuga Girls High School grounds.

In the other clubs category matches, Wolves beat Buxton Hawks 21-13,Shanzu Teachers College defeated Oceaners 34-17,and Wolves beat Oceaners 39-19, while Shanzu Teachers College beat Wolves 29-23.

In the schools category, defending champions Mombasa High School and Shimba Hills Secondary topped their pools to make the semi finals.

Mombasa High whipped Shanzu Teachers College 40-21 after another deserving 27-06 win over Shimba Hills Secondary. Waa Girls beat Matuga 22-18 while Shanzu Teachers College beat Shimba Hills 24-14.

The Indiana Pacers continued their recovery from a long losing streak with a second straight victory, Danny Granger inspiring the win with 29 points in a 101-93 triumph over the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday.

Losing streak

The back-to-back wins, following a seven-game losing streak, have helped the Pacers climb to within half a game of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"Obviously, I thought it was a very good win for our ballclub," Pacers coach Jim O'Brien told reporters.

"Winning is great. We love winning. I liked seeing people work so hard with a smile on their face."

Making strides

Those smiles could disappear quickly, however, when the Pacers face the top two teams in the East - the Boston Celtics on Tuesday and Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.

"I like to think we're making strides, but games against Boston and Detroit will show if we've made them."

Travis Diener added 15 points and nine assists and Jeff Foster 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Pacers, who played the second half without key scorer Mike Dunleavy after he suffered a bruised knee.

TANZANIA : Beach Basketball Tourney for Dar

Suleiman Jongo

Dar es Salaam's Coco Beach will tomorrow be a centre of attraction as several teams will compete in the 3-aside beach basketball tournament.

This will be the second time for the beach sport to take place.

Basketball Dar es Salaam (BD) in collaboration with the event's sponsors, Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, organised the similar event last December.

BD director Mbaga Mwamboma said yesterday that the beach sport has been playing a great role of promoting beach basketball as several people participate. "This is one way or another of promoting beach basketball, which seems to be a new sport for most of people in the country," he said.

The day-long event is played on the sand whereby participants earn several token prizes from the sponsors. Mbaga said participating teams will be formed by players, whose teams have been competing in the popular money-spinning RBA Kili leagues for both men and women and young players.

Mwamboma had on the other hand said the event will also be open for those with interest to learn how to play beach basketball. "It's like a bash party, people come together, play, enjoy music and share good light moments as a basketball family," he said.

KENYA : St George’s girls in winning start

By Oscar Pilipili

Champions St George’s opened the season on a positive note by winning two matches during the Nairobi secondary schools girls’ basketball league.

St George’s defeated Kianda 44-7 in a one-sided preliminary match at Kenya Railway Club Nairobi on Saturday.
Beryl Aloo and Drusillah Njoki sunk four baskets each with Tanya Ogwel, Janet Akinyi and Tracy Mwangi contributing four points each for the champions.
Jeanette Oyunga, Kathleen Simiyu and Cindy Orata replied for Kianda with two points each.
After easily winning the first match, St George’s were forced to work extra hard before pipping Hospital Hill 21-20 in an action-packed match. Ogwel starred for St George’s, scoring eight points with Georgina Odhiambo managing seven for Hospital Hill.
The match was temporarily stopped in the final quarter after St George’s coach, Juma Kent, ordered his players out of the court to protest what he termed as bias officiating. "The umpires are unfair and they should let the best team win," he said.
St George’s captain, Garnet Iyadi, expressed satisfaction over their double victory saying it was a good beginning in their quest to retain the provincial title.
"The victories have laid a strong foundation for our campaign in the league," Iyadi said. "We hope to build on that performance in our next matches," she said.
Hospital Hill captain, Mitchelle Synaida conceded defeat saying St George’s were the bettr team.
"There must be a winner and a loser in every competition, but the umpires weren’t fair either," said Synaida.
The girls’ championship is featuring 16 schools divided into four pools of the same number of teams.

The competition continues next weekend.

KENYA : Western branch suspends polls due to insecurity

By Peter Atsiaya

Kenya Basketball Federation Western branch has suspended this weekend’s activities including elections due to insecurity.

Secretary Don Liru said because of the post-election violence in the area the activities including elections, a coaching clinic and a tournament had to be called off.

"The security situation is still bad. Transport services have not fully resumed making it difficult for participants to reach venues of the activities," said Liru.
Liru, who is also the national second vice-chairman in charge of youth affairs, said dates for the events would be announced later.
The branch was supposed to hold its elections and a coaching workshop at Kakamega High School on Friday.
Makambo Open tournament, the first championship on the branch’s calendar, was to be staged at St Peter’s High School Mumias on Saturday.
Liru explained that the post election violence had delayed the federation’s programme.
He expressed fear that some of the tournaments including Chairman’s Cup and Frida Shiroya championship might not be held because they could collide with schools’ competitions.

KENYA : St Austins Thrash Nairobi School in Basketball

by Sammy Kitula
Nairobi

Just when Nairobi School thought they had finally hit rock bottom, along came more indignity in their backyard in the ongoing Nairobi Secondary Schools Association boys' basketball championship.

Kevin Samora scored 18 points while Charles Omondi added another 16 as St. Austin's thrashed them 66-36 on Thursday night.

The five-time national champions, who are also the Nairobi Province's defending champions, jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter and wound up the first half leading 32-14.

"We played a very relaxed game. The hosts didn't give us any formidable challenge. We knew that we would win anyway, since they (Nairobi School) have never defeated us in the past," said St. Austin's coach David Maina.

Turnovers

Indeche Aturaya scored 14 points and Dennis Shikutwa had 13 points and 5 rebounds for the hosts, who committed numerous turnovers as they trailed St. Austin's by 30 points at fulltime.

And afterwards, head coach Martin Mungai simply seemed at a loss for answers.

"It was a very difficult match, bearing in mind that our opponents are the defending champions. We committed numerous turnovers that cost us the victory, but all in all, it was a good experience for us.

We are full of optimism as the league has just began," said head coach, Martin Mungai.

The victors led 56-19 after three quarters before going up 66-36 on the buzzer.

"We executed offensively, hit some shots," said Maina. "Defensively we did a decent job in the first quarter and from there we just kept the pressure on them," he added.

This was St. Austin's' second win in three days, after they saw off Sunshine High school 114-14 in a one-sided duel on Monday. The playing surface didn't make matters any better as players from both sides took caution of the court that was slippery after a heavy downpour.

Maina says that he is keen to guide his team to claim the national helm, after faltering during last year's edition.

The nine-time Provincial champions will be gunning to bag the national title for a record sixth time.

"We must do all it takes to get back at the helm. We have had thorough training and I'm sure our preparations won't be in futility," he said.

Girls basketball

In the meantime, the NSSA girls' basketball championship gets underway today at Railway grounds. 16 teams are expected to take part in this year's season.

Speaking on Friday, NSSSA basketball secretary, Peter Manundu said that they had delayed the starting of the girls' matches due to the few entries they had received in this category.
"The girls' teams are fewer compared to the boys and that's the reason why we are starting a week late. Boys have 32 teams while their counterparts have only 16," said Manundu.

Contrary to the boys' league which is played during the week, the girls' matches will only take place during weekends.

Expected teams include St. George's High school, Precious Blood Riruta, Moi Nairobi Girls High school and Buruburu Girls High school among others.

The three are students at Union University in Tennessee. The university's women's basketball head coach, Mark Campbell, said the trio who escaped the tragedy unhurt will stay in his house outside the campus until repair work is completed. Speaking on telephone from US on Thursday, Campbell said it was a miracle that the three together with other students escaped unhurt after the tornado which caused extensive damage to the facilities left several students injured.

"I want to assure Kenyans that the girls are safe and are currently staying at my house until normalcy returns at the campus." Campbell said on telephone while asking the parents, friends, relatives and the basketball fraternity not to panic. According to the university president David S. Dockery, all students including the 13 who were trapped in the fallen rubble were rescued. Fifty-one students, nine of them who suffered serious injuries were taken to the hospital. There were no fatalities, he said. Dockery said seventeen buildings were damaged.

UGANDA : Leopards Snatch Sparks Pair

Sande Bashaija
Kampala

NATIONAL Basketball League women's champions Kampala City Council (KCC) Leopards are to sign Makerere University Sparks duo Marion Nakaziba and Carol Nantalo ahead of the new season.

The transfer window opened on Monday and the two star players have already picked forms from the basketball governing body Fuba.

"We are soon finalizing everything. The players have already agreed personal terms and what remains is clearance from Sparks managers," KCC Leopards team manager Joy Olinga told Daily Monitor yesterday.

"The girls have played together for a long time and will add muscle to our team. It's not easy defending a championship and that's why we are strengthening our squad," Olinga added.

The departure of the duo comes as a heavy blow to 2003 champions Sparks, who are trying to re-build after failing to make play-offs last season. They have also lost Vicky Nassolo to Kampala International University (KIU) Rangers.

"I finished university and have to forge a way forward. The KCC management promised to get me a job somewhere and I can't let the chance pass," Nantalo, who is commonly referred to as Baby in basketball circles, said.

According to the deal, KCC Leopards will sponsor the former Sparks captain Nakaziba for further studies after she graduated from Makerere.

KENYA : Alarm Over Loss On Interest in Basketball

Sammy Kitula
Nairobi

The Nairobi Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) has raised concern the apparent lack of interest by some city schools in basketball.

With the NSSSA) first term games already underway, many schools have opted out of this year's basketball season. Hillcrest and Aga Khan High school have pulled out, while Jamhuri High School are yet to honour their fixtures.

According to the NSSSA basketball secretary, Peter Manundu, this trend will adversely affect the future of basketball in the city, as well as having individual talent go to waste.

"It's quite alarming to realise that some schools have decided to do away with basketball in their calendar of sports. Whereas schools in other provinces are busy recruiting and introducing the game to their students, others are losing interest," lamented Manundu.

Echoing the secretary's sentiments was Aquinas High School's basketball head coach, Charles Ng'ang'a. He said the withdrawal of teams that were powerhouses in this sport during the late 80's and early 90's is a big blow to the development of the game.

"This is worrying. Where will the national team get new players from, if some schools have decided to do away with basketball in their calendar? This clearly makes individual talent to go to waste," said Ng'ang'a.

Of the 38 schools which participated in last year's qualifiers six have opted out.

Eight matches will be played on Thursday as city schools launch their preparation for the national games set for Central Province in April. Nairobi schools will be trying to recapture the national trophy that has eluded them for quite some time. Maseno School are the current champions

Divided into eight pools

The fixtures released by the NSSSA basketball secretary indicate that 32 schools have been divided into eight pools of four teams each.

The first round matches that started on Monday are scheduled to run until February 25. The second round duels that will involve 12 teams are planned to start from February 28 to March 6. The quarter-finals are set for March 8, semi-finals on March 29, while the play-offs and final would be held on March 29. Winners of the Nairobi tournament represent the province during the nationals from April 7 to 13.

Manundu said venues for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final will be neutral and the participating teams shall be notified at a later date. "Venues for knockout matches will be such that none of the qualifying teams will enjoy home advantage," he said.

SOUTH AFRICA : Basketball SA- Questions about corporate governance?

Even before Eskom started it's load shedding many basketball players will tell you that basketball has been without power for the last decade. Since the Basketball SA and the department of Sport met last year to discuss the status of basketball we have not had an update from either of the parties.

I understand that at the meeting held last year it was decided that the President was supposed to call a meeting to discuss the finances & the constitution before the end of 2007. It seems that the meeting still hasn't been called to this day.

Corporate Governance issues around why an excutive comittee meeting was not called for a year was also discussed The only executive meeting that was held by Basketball SA last year was a special meeting to approve the National team and the costs of going to Afrobasket.

The last council meeting was in November 2006 since then there hasn't been an AGM, Manco meeting & council meeting. Two weeks ago I received an email with the Wheelchair Basketball Calendar for the whole year. I still haven't seen a Basketball SA calendar for this year.

Amatuer basketball in SA needs a strong motherbody in order for the sport to grow and I worry that we are not making enough progress in adminsitration. I tried to contact the President of Basketball SA, the Vice-President of Provinces and both phones were off. I hope that one day we can do an interview with them to get the comment on these issues I've raised.

PBL-Update
Things are not looking too positive for the professional basketball league as well as most companies are putting money into 2010 or just not interested.

With the lack of activity happening in amatuer basketball it seems like there is no positive news on finding a new professional basketball league sponsor.

There was talk of a potential sponsor a few weeks ago but the deal with this sponsor doesn't look like it's going to be finalised any time soon.

SOUTH AFRICA : League of Professionals Press Release-01/02/2008

If you were at any of the LOP basketball events towards the end of 2007, you will know that basketball is well on its way back up the sporting ranks. LOP was launched in September 2007 and by December 2007, it had already managed to secure radio airtime exposure well over R600 000 through its partners, particularly ESPN and Newtown Improvement District (NID). Even more exciting was the fact that for the first time in many years, basketball players could play to thousands of spectators. One of the biggest highlights was the Hip Hop dance battles known as 'Kramping'. If you don't know what this is, google it…that said, I would like to welcome you to the streets of Jozi. Kramping is big in high schools…watch the space... Based on the LOP achievements, one could comfortably say, the year 2007 was a good launching pad for basketball and the hip hop lifestyle that it is associated with it.

2008 brings with it even more excitement. LOP registration date closed on 31st of January 2008 and it is no surprise that even the big teams have now registered to play in the LOP. If you know your SA basketball, you will remember that Egoli Magic used to be one of the top teams in the former Premier Basketball League (PBL). They went to the finals against the then Durban based Kwazulu Marlins in 1996. Now you will be able to see this team back in action in the LOP. Other teams include Tlou MGI, Wits Rebels, Wanderers Scorpions, Wits Rhinos, MGI Alumni, Wits Alumni and the list goes on!

Before I go on and on about the teams in the LOP, let me first put the LOP into perspective so that one understands the structures of basketball and were LOP fits in. LOP was founded by a few passionate basketball players based in Joburg, for the fact that most teams playing in the LOP were based in Joburg, it was endorsed by the Johannesburg Basketball Association (JBA) as the official Joburg League, meaning that teams looking to play in the LOP will have to first request permission from their respective districts (i.e. Tshwane Basketball Association (TBA), Sedibeng Basketball Association (SBA) etc. As the official Joburg Basketball League, the winning team in the LOP will face champions from other districts in order to determine the top team in Gauteng. With Gauteng Basketball Association (GBA) great intends of starting a Gauteng Premier Basketball League, the winning team in this league should represent GP at national level. We are hoping to have the LOP team from Joburg to be the one leading the way through to the nationals.

LOP will be tipping off on the weekend of the 29th February 2008 with the official season launch on the 1st March 2008 at Wits University indoor basketball court (Hall 29). The launch will consist of a clash between the 2007 finalists (Tlou MGI who are last year's LOP Champion vs the Wits Rebels) as well as the Hip Hop dance battles between the two top dance crews Soweto's finest vs. Eclipse. There will be lots of give-aways from ESPN with Yfm punting the launch. More info will be given on Yfm closer to the launch date so keep bouncing those balls and see you at the courts!

For more information about LOP or JBA please do not hesitate to contact me.
