UGANDA : Twist in rules as Rhinos are demoted
By Charles Mutebi
THE top and bottom three finishers in the three men’s national basketball league divisions in the 2007 league will be promoted and relegated respectively, instead of two as was expected.
The revelation was made by local basketball federation technical committee following their meeting on Tuesday at YMCA.
The decision implies that 1997 champions Charging Rhinos will be relegated for the first time to the second division, to be replaced by now promoted Gulu Hawks.
Committee member Joseph Manano said that the decision was in line with the rules and regulations.
“Our constitution stipulates that the technical committee will decide how many teams get promoted and relegated at the end of every season,” Manano explained.
He acknowledged that the decision was a sudden revision to the earlier messages that indicated that only two teams would go up and down.
But he promised that in the future, teams will know beforehand the full details of promotion and relegation.
