LUBIRI High School and Crane High School teams are the new Sprite schools basketball champions.
They defeated Bugema Adventist SS and Bugwere SS respectively during the finals of the Sprite Invitational basketball tournament in Fort Portal last weekend.
Lubiri utilised a late fourth-quarter surge to beat Bugema 58-54 and claim the boys’ title while Crane High produced a ruthless display to defeat Bugwere 54-35 and lift the girls’ trophy.
In the boys’ final, Lubiri took an 8-point lead in the first quarter and with 24 points from Ramathan Busulwa (tournament top scorer) and 12 from Nicholas Seguya, they built a 29-18 lead at halftime.
But rallying behind event Most Valuable Player (MVP) Paul Marini, Bugema put in a late surge in the third quarter to narrow the deficit to 42-40 and take a one-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Bugema failed to maintain the pace though as they committed two turnovers with two minutes left in the game which Lubiri’s Joseph Kisitu capitalised on to seal victory.
Girls’ MVP Diana Nakimuli scored 25 points as Crane High held off an early run from Bugwere to win 54-35.
