UGANDA : Warriors, A-1 Challenge finish third


NKUMBA University Marines and Lady Bucks on Sunday received Shs1.5m and fully connected Motorola C113 mobile phones for emerging champions of the 2006 MTN-FUBA basketball league. It's the first time champions are getting a cash prize.
The champions also received trophies and gold medals at an awards ceremony held at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

Marines defeated Sadolin Power 3-1 in the best of five final play-offs while Lady Bucks stunned pre-season favourites KCC Leopards by the same score. The first runners-up Power and Leopards were also rewarded with Shs500,000.Men's record champions Falcons almost ended the season empty handed after losing 63-66 to Warriors in the third place play-off but were consoled with the most defensive team award. They were given a trophy and decorated with bronze medals.

Dethroned ladies champions A-1 Challenge saw off KIU Rangers to take bronze and were also rewarded for being the most defensive team.

Yello Go champions Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mukono and first runners-up Knight Riders, also most improved team in the division were given plaques while third placed Heaters took home a trophy.

Nkumba Marines' Boniface Okello was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the Yello Max Conference to dethrone Norman Blick.
Flavia Oketcho of Lady Bucks emerged the ladies MVP. Geoffrey Omondi of UCU Mukono was MVP in Yello Go while Joshua Karugaba (Crane High) took the accolade in second division.

For the second successive season Warriors' star Stephen Okias and Frances Nabulobi (Lady Bucks) emerged top scorers. Okias scored 417 points, Nabulobi 406 while Evans Enabu 335 top scored in Yello Go.

MTN Sponsorship and Promotions Manager Aggrey Kagonyera officiated at the poorly attended awards ceremony. FUBA's decision to charge entrance fees was blamed for low attendance.
