TANZANIA : Zone V basketball tourney postponed

The African Zone Five Basketball Championships, which was set for this year, have been postponed.

The championships were earlier scheduled to take place from November 29 to December 4 in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Tanzania basketball Federation (TBF) Secretary General, Lawrence Cheyo, said yesterday that the championships would be held in January next year.

Cheyo did not give reasons why the event was called off.
Cheyo said new dates of the tournament would be set in the Zone Five meeting in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Nairobi meeting will be attended by Zone Five member countries - Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and Zanzibar.

The FIBA-Africa Zone Five general elections will also be held in Kenya.

Until the championships were being postponed TBF had already picked players to form men and women’s teams.

The men’s team players were Henry Mwinuka (Outsiders), Frank Kusiga, Ashraf Harun, Frank Simkoko, Charles Makene, Juma Kissoky and Apollo Tumsifu (JKT).

Others were Adam Jigame, Mohamed Mbwana, Abdallah Kavishe (Chang’ombe Boys), Mohamed Yusuph, Jije Makani, George Tarimo (Savio) and Pascal Nsana (Magereza).

There were also Kizito Bahati, Vicent Shinda, Amon Sembeya (Planet Mwanza), Mohamed Dibo Ally, Shisarya Mwiki (Vijana) and Alex George.

The women’s team had Amina Ahmed, Linda Hamza (Lady Lioness), Lucy Agustino, Grace Peter, Grace Daud, Jabu Shabani (Jeshi Stars), Neema Emanuel, Grace Mathisa, Anna Paul, Eliza Christopher, Stella Michael, Dorothea Lukindo (Polisi Dar es Salaam).

Others were Evodia Kazinja, Elizabeth Masenyi, Doritha Mbunda, Lulu Joseph, Nelly Anyangisye (JKT), Esther Nelson (Cargo Ladies), Agnes Ayubu (Filbert Bayi Secondary School) and Naima Boli (Magereza).

The coaches of the team were Hassan Kange, Martin Kemwaga, Bahati Mgunda, Tubert Matiku and Evarist Mapunda.
