Kampala. UCU’s Richard Ongom
missed one of two free-throws in the final second to hand Ndejje
University their second straight Zuku University Basketball
Championship at the Lugogo MTN Arena on Saturday.
Ndejje won the closely contested tie 53-52 in what was also a repeat of last year’s final.
James Okello was the hero for Ndejje despite missing two free throws with 4.7 seconds left.
The forward scored a joint game high 16 points, converting one of two free throws with less than 14 seconds left to increase Ndejje’s lead to 53-51.
Jonah Otim added 12 points while Joseph Wacha and Brian Namake scored 16 and 13 points respectively for UCU. UCU were more fortunate in the ladies’ final, avenging last year’s loss to Makerere with a 61-59 victory. Velma Achieng scored 19 while Purity Adhiambo added 18 points for UCU’s narrow escape.
Joy Chemutai was unlucky to be on the losing side, having scored a game high 28 points for Makerere in the close encounter. The league will climax this weekend with an All-star game between Uganda and their Kenyan counterparts.
