TANZANIA : Jogoo Edge Out Prisons in National Basketball League
JOGOO on Tuesday registered their second win in the ongoing National Basketball League (NBL) which commenced last Friday at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Jogoo recorded a slim 68- 63 win over Tanzania Prisons in a thrilling and competitive game in the league which involves over 20 teams that are battling it out for the national championship title organized by the Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF).
Tuesday's win and their previous 141-76 victory against Mabibo Bullets last Saturday put them in second position in their Azam TV Group, behind leaders Savio.
Other groups are named Azam Energy, Azam Cola and Azam Uhai which are currently led by JKT, Vijana 'City Bulls' and Jeshi Stars respectively.
In Wednesday's games, Jogoo will fight for the top spot against Savio, Oilers will take on ABC, Chang'ombe will face JKT and Chui will lock horns with Bandari Tanga. In the ladies category, Kurasini Divers will play against Tanzania Prisons Queens.
The league was earlier scheduled to start last Tuesday but was postponed to Saturday due to the withdrawal of some sponsors at the eleventh hour.
Participating teams come from Tanga, Dodoma, Morogoro, Lindi, Arusha, Mbeya, Mtwara and hosts Dar es Salaam. They are Vijana, popularly known as 'City Bulls', ABC, Chui, Don Bosco, Oilers, Chang'ombe, JKT, Jogoo Kurasini Hits, Ilala Flats, Don Bosco Lioness, Jeshi Stars and JKT, all from Dar es Salaam in the men and women's categories.
Others are Tanga Wanted, Tanga Kings and Risasi from Tanga; University of Dodoma (UDOM) and Mzinga from Morogoro. NBL reigning men's champions ABC, while Don Bosco Lioness hold the women's title.
The Mainland men and women's champions will battle with their Zanzibar counterparts for a ticket to represent the country in the Zone Five tournament to be held in Mombasa, Kenya later in August.
