Kenya national men basketball team will play Somalia while the women’s team lines up against Egypt on Monday evening as the Fiba Zone V Championships enter day two in Kampala, Uganda.
They arrived on Sunday morning and had time to rest in readiness to launching their campaign at the MTN Lugogo Indoor Arena. In the only two games of the day, the men’s team will be first on the court to face Somalia at 5pm local time.
The Anthony Ojukwu coached side will be out to revenge last year’s 79-81 loss to the same team in the same tournament. Ancete Wafula, Joseph Khaemba and William Ochieng were fielded in that game and will be facing a familiar opponent on Monday.
The ladies will play Egypt at 7 p.m. Even though a much changed side, they will be looking to make it a double after last year’s 70-64 win over the Egyptians in Tanzania.
Then captain Silalei Shani is the key absentee in the side but have Hilda Indasi and Purity Adhiambo surviving from the winning side.
Kenya will be back in action on Tuesday when the men’s side face Rwanda, a team Ojukwu has said is a major threat alongside Uganda at the championships.
Rwanda lost to Egypt in last year’s final and has carried a strong team to Kampala that includes professionals Bradley Cameroon who plays for South Bend in Indiana City and Kenneth Herbert Gasana of Al Wakrah in Qatar.
The ladies will play Uganda on Wednesday before men play Egypt on Friday. Kenya and Egypt will play the return game of the women category on Saturday before wrapping up the campaign against Uganda on Sunday.
The men's team will play their final game against Uganda on Saturday. In the opening games played on Sunday, Egypt beat Rwanda 79-63 while Uganda upset Somalia 85-74 in the men category.
The sole game of women category saw Egypt narrowly edge out host Uganda 65-61.
