KENYA : Kenya Team Run Over Nairobi Select in Friendly


KENYA team beat Nairobi Select team 50-41 in a friendly match played at Nyayo Stadium gymnasium.
The national side under coaches Evelyn Kedogo and David Maina got off to a slow start and never lived up to the expectations of the many fans who turned up for the friendly. At the end of the first quarter, Kenya team trailed 9-12 before turning tables to lead 29-18 at the break.
The losers, comprising Premier League players, took third quarter 11-10 but were downed 20-12 in the last. Georgia Otieno led the side with 13 points and Bridgit Nanzala made 10 before limping out with an injury. For the Select side, play maker Cynthia Irankunda managed nine and Evelyn Itabo shot 8.
The other match of the night saw, Kenya men thump International team composed of foreign-based players 62-50. The winners took total control from the onset cruising to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter. They went on to seal the second quarter 11-6 before erupting for a huge 20-12 margin in the third and winding off with a 22-16 cushion in the fourth.
James Mwangi scored 14 points while veteran shooting forward Ancette Wafula posted 11 for Kenya who are handled by Anthony Ojukwu and Tony Ochieng. The foreigners had 15 from Chris Musumba. The national teams are in camp ahead of the Fiba Africa Zone 5 Afro basketball tournament slated for Kampala, Uganda from September 21-28. Favourites Egypt are among 10 teams that have confirmed participation in the tournament. A total of four women and six men's sides will feature in the event at Lugogo Indoor Hall.
Kenya women and Egypt men are the defending champions having won the last edition in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania last year. The wining teams in the tournament will qualify for the All Africa Games as well as the Africa Nations Cup.
