Africa: 15 Teams for Fiba Africa Zone 5 Club Champs Later This Month in Mombasa


KENYA will be heavily represented in the FIBA Africa Zone 5 Club Championships planned for later this month in Mombasa.
Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) secretary Vitalis Gode, said a total of 15 clubs (eight men and seven women's) have already confirmed participation in the week-long event set for August 25-30 in the coastal town.
Leading the onslaught in the regional championships are men and women's league champions Co-op Bank of Kenya and Kenya Ports Authority respectively. The other two are league runners up KPA and United States International University (USIU). Eagles Wings, who are the reigning champions and Africa club bronze medalist are likely to be granted a wild card.
The other clubs that have confirmed participation are the men's champions Urunani, Newstars and Berco Stars (Burundi); Ethiopia Water (Ethiopia); Espoir (Rwanda); City Oilers, Tiger Head Power, KCCA and UCU Canons (Uganda) and Don Bosco (Tanzania).
He said more entries are expected from South Sudan and Zanzibar. The winners will book a ticket to the Africa Club Championships set for later in the year.
Meanwhile, Kenya's Agina Wesonga is among the officials appointed to officiate in the five-day tournament. He will serve as commissioner along side-- Ussene Camilo ( Mozambique) and Manuel Sofrimento (Angola). The referees are--Munatamba Muwezhi (Zambia), Siwula Suwilanji (Zambia), Banza Kalume Tonton (RD Congo), Muchenu Joyce (Zimbabwe) and Wiese Natacha (South Africa).
Coast Basketball Association (CBA) chairman Hilmi Ali said they are all set for the tournament--the first ever international event to be held in Mombasa. He said he has so far gotten over 20 sponsors.
