Women: UCU v Leopards
Men: Warriors v Ndejje
IT has been the biggest game in local women’s basketball for the last five years. Make that six.
Reigning champions UCU Lady Canons face the KCCA Leopards on Friday at the YMCA in the first seasonal encounter of what is still the best display of women’s basketball in the National Basketball League (NBL).
Female players in the NBL feel they get less attention than they deserve but if there is one game that has tried to promote their cause, it is UCU v KCCA.
The two rivals have split the last five championships, with UCU besting their rivals 4-2 in last year’s best of seven Finals.
But the Leopards have put themselves in a position to bounce back, snatching the best player in the game (Peace Proscovia) from UCU as well as the versatile Winnie Anyango from the Makerere Sparks.
The Canons will brace themselves for a tough battle for this year’s title and Boniface Okello’s team will be boosted by the return of Maureen Amoding.
The talismanic scorer was on the verge of leaving the university side after completing her studies early this year. But she has been convinced to stay and that makes the Canons title contenders again.
In the men’s NBL, the Warriors face Ndejje Angels as both sides seek to bounce back from disappointing defeats from their last games.
The Warriors were defeated by KIU on the back of a questionable display, similar to Ndejje’s low-scoring reverse to the UCU Canons.
