No games since the start of the ZUKU TV basketball league last month had drawn a mammoth gathering than the series played at Uganda Christian University (UCU) main campus basketball courts on Friday evening.
The 7 fixtures on card each had a special significance to the players on court, the respective technical benches, and obviously the fans in the terraces.
Ndejje University women basketball team  maintained the fine run with 2 great back to back victories over Bugema and Cavendish in 58 – 13 and 68 – 28 victories respectively.
Lillian Zawedde was the main architect in the each of the Luwero based institution's victories.
Kampala University ladies team  also triumphed 56 – 23 past Bugema University in another one sided battle.
Victoria Ondiso led Kampala University’s onslaught with a game high 24 points in the 52 -13 victory over Bugema University.
Margret Wesonga and Robinah Nkabidwa added 10 and 6 respectively.
Bugema, who managed a point in the opening quarter, and 4 apiece in the subsequent last quarters through FabiolaMujane, NkondeMulenga, RhonaMelia and Diane Ineza put up a spirited true fighting mentality though it was rendered little too late.
Four men basketball games were played on the day with Kampala University opening the door in that 52 – 13 victory over Bugema University.
Tonny Situma carried the game’s highest score with 16 points collected. Michael Otieno returned 12 while Nickson Were was the other top performer with 8.
Bugema will have Jeremie Bikomia to credit for a team high 8 as Hani Gonda managed to return 6.
Bugema suffered another set back when Ndejje imposing further punishment with the latter winning 38 -12.
In a closely contested duel, St Lawrence narrowly carried the day as they succumbed to a 3 points deficit at the hands of Ndejje University.
Floodlights Game: Ndejje University Vs Cavendish:
The long awaited game of the day, played under the flood lights was the affair between Ndejje and Cavendish.
Tempers flared as early as the first minute of the game and Geofrey Soro was red carded  for fighting. Ndejje trailed for the first 3 quarters, before taking the lead in the last segments of the 3rd quarter.
With the clock fast dashing, Cavendish once again grabbed the lead in the last quarter of the game.
The crowd charged, tactics changed and the players’ mentality from the 2 sides could definitely be envisaged.
Each of the 10 members on court on either side played with the passion and desire to win.
With 60 seconds of the last quarter, Cavendish led 69 – 64. Big players thrive on big moments. Brian Odul, who had an enterprising evening at office mastered minded the comeback.
Coach Walker Obedi’s side put in two three pointers to take lead 70 – 69 with less than 10 seconds on the clock.
Despite Cavendish’s efforts to rally a comeback, it all backfired and 70 – 69 the game ended.
“The game was highly charged especially in the opening 2 quarters but settled by the half time and the tense finish is the true spirit of basketball”, Obedi told Kawowo Sports after the games.
Conference finals:
After the group games, the top ranked 4 teams in their conference groups will be engaged in the conference finals format, the first of its nature in Uganda.
This will then help determine the 4 semifinalists and finally the finals from whom the best university will be crowned.
