KENYA : Thunder, Lions free fall continues

Thunder and Lions basketball clubs
continued with their poor start to the 2014 season after losing third
straight matches over the weekend in the national classic league.
Lions failed to show up for their match against Nairobi Aviation College on Saturday, losing out on a 0-20 walkover to the students.
The former champions were joined on the winless corner by last season’s surprise package Thunder who were beaten 65-50 by Nakuru Club.
Trailing 20-27 at the breather, Thunder fell off the pace with a 17-8 loss in the first quarter but narrowly won the second 12-10.
Nakuru overpowered the visitors with a 24-6 win in the third quarter and went on to claim maximum points despite losing the fourth 24-14. Michael Akumu scored 15 points for Nakuru and Lucas Lukongo 13 for Thunder.
In the Strathmore derby, Peter Shilton’s 21 points led Strathmore University to a 50-40 win over Blades. Vincent Majimbo managed 10 points for Blades whose three-match unbeaten record came down tumbling at the hands of their juniors.
Ulinzi Warriors was the biggest winner of the weekend registering high scores against Terror and Mennonite.
Their first match on Saturday against the University of Nairobi side ended in a 82-57 scoreline. Captain William Ochieng led the scorers with 22 points while Dan Nabuya top scored for Terror with 18.
On Sunday, the military side beat Mennonite 85-34 with Eric Mutoro scoring 22 points and Victor Odendo 21. Felix Odhiambo scored 14 points for Mennonite.
A day earlier, Mennonite had broken its winless run beating Kenyatta University Pirates 69-54. Collins Ochieng scored a game high 38 points for Mennonite.
It was a fruitful outing for defending champions Cooperative Bank in Mombasa after beating host Kenya Ports Authority, KPA, 61-54.
The tight contest was tied 27-27 at the breather. Allan Ouma and Titus Musembi scored 11 points apiece for the bankers while Samuel Ocholla had 16 for KPA.
A half basket gifted Ulinzi Blades a 61-60 last-minute victory over Eagle Wings in the women premier.
It was a bad day in office for Wings who squandered a 32-29 halftime lead. Brigid Nanzala top scored for the soldiers with 22 points while Lucy Machuma scored 14 points for Wings.
KPA extended its unbeaten run scoring 63-46 against Cooperative Bank.
Yvonne Akinyi had 19 points for KPA with Lynette Juma hitting 16 for the bankers. Interestingly, Co-op Bank won three quarters against KPAs one.
The second, third and fourth quarters went to Co-op Bank 8-6, 15-12 and 13-12 respectively while KPA won the first 23-10 which made all the difference.
Storms east past Strathmore
Sprite Storms eased past Strathmore University with a comeback 42-39 win after trailing 16-26 at the break. Strathmore had surged forward with 10-1 and 16-14 victories in the opening quarters.
However, a resurgent Storms changed tact and managed to overturn the scoreline upon resumption. They won the third and fourth quarters 11-9 and 15-4 to condemn the students to their first defeat.
Other results had Co-op Bank beat NYTA-Shimba 48-28, Safe Spaces scored 46-42 against Kenya College of Accountancy- University, KCA-U, and Kenyatta University Oryx beat Mennonite 57-15.
