KENYA : Losing league debuts for Equity, Kenya Airport

Equity Bank, Kenya Airports Authority, KAA, and Ulinzi Blades had a losing debut in the national classic league forfeiting their opening matches as the 2014 season got underway over the weekend.
KAA and Equity are playing in the men premier league after earning promotion from division one while Ulinzi is making a return to the women premier. KAA was the first on the court Saturday going down 96-63 to Kenya Ports Authority, KPA, in Mombasa.
Alex Lugasi scored a game high 26 points for the Dockers while Alfred Kipruto had 13 for the visitors.
KPA won all quarters 27-6, 26-15, 20-19 and 23-22 respectively. Equity lost 49-40 to Strathmore University after trailing 21-27 at the breather. Emmanuel Soja had 23 points for Strathmore with Vincent Onsogo scoring 12 for the bankers. Champions Co-operative Bank beat Thunder 47-44 in a game Griffin Ligare top scored for Thunder with 20 points.
Allan Ouma scored 10 points for the bankers.
It was a tough encounter that had the lead change hands severally.Co-op took home the first quarter 12-4 before Thunder won the second 16-10.
Enjoying a two point lead, Co-op extended their lead in the third quarter winning 11-7. Thunder’s 17-14 victory in the fourth quarter was not enough to overturn the scoreline in their favor.
In the other match of the men premier, visitors Ulinzi Warriors beat Nakuru Club 72-54.
Ulinzi fall to Storms 
In the women premier, Ulinzi’s hopes of a good start were dashed after a 52-42 loss to Sprite Storms.
The first half was highly competitive as the game tied 23-23 at halftime after 10-10 and 13-13 scores in the first two quarters.
Storms broke away in the third quarter winning 18-7 and not even a 12-11 win by Ulinzi in the fourth quarter could deny them maximum points. Mercy Wanyama was Storms’ highest scorer with 14 points while Sarah Anyango had 15 points for the soldiers.
Defending champions KPA scored 68-37 past fellow Coastal side NYTA-Shimba at the Makande Gymnasium.
17 points from Lucy Ohanga and 13 from Brenda Angeshi were enough to lead the Dockers to their first win of the season.
Lillian Adera’s 12 points were not enough to spur Shimba into victory after trailing 14-37 at the halftime break. A half basket helped Eagle Wings beat Safe Spaces 49-48 in a match the former champions trailed 15-21 at the breather.
Co-operative Bank beat Western Delight 63-27 in Kakamega as Kenya College of Accountancy- University, KCA-U, scored 50-36 past Mennonite.
