The revelation was made by the company’s Country Manager, Jared Mokobo during the league’s launch at Copper Chimney, former Oasis Restaurant, Lugogo in Kampala on Thursday.
“On top of the cash prize, medals and trophies to the best universities and players, the students stand a chance to win educational scholarships”, Mokobo said.
The 10 team league, that received the full blessing of the parent body of all universities in Uganda, the National University Sports Federation of Uganda (NUSFU), is the second beneficial of ZUKU's generosity of sports in the region, after Kenya.
"We are really proud of the ZUBL and its impact it has had in Kenya. Uganda is a potential market because the entire nation has the enthusiasm towards sports and basketball in particular", Mokobo added.
Despite the absence of Nkumba, MUBS, Kyambogo and Kampala International University who all miss out for different unclear reasons, 10 universities are taking part in this year’s championships.
Kisubi Brothers University College, Uganda Christian University, Makerere University, St Lawrence University, Cavendish University, Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Ndejje University, Bugema University and Kampala University are the 10 universities that will take part in this year's championships.
"We are glad for ZUKU T.V and the participating universities. As NUSFU, we plan to attract more and more teams on board so that the league gets across the entire country", NUSFU's vice president, Vincent Kisenyi remarked.
National Council of Sports general secretary, Jasper Aligawesa who was present to witness the event challenged ZUKU to spread to the other sporting events in the country.
"Its an honor to have you (ZUKU TV) sponsoring University basketball in Uganda, but i would appeal to you to extend to other sporting disciplines", he added.
Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) president , Ambrose Tashobya who gallantly defended the 25 years age limit also attended launch
