KENYA : KBF Increase Number of Teams in Premier League

THE number of teams in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) League have been increased. The men's league will now feature 16 team up from 12 while the women's event will have 14 teams from 12.
The change, adopted during a team managers' meeting at Nyayo Stadium, will now see the men's league divided in two pools of eight teams each with the women's event also featuring two groups of seven teams each. Division One will also have 16 teams broken into two pools of 8 each.
Following the development, only four teams from each category will make the play-offs from all the three divisions and will play in the best of five series. KBF fixtures secretary, Joseph Amoko, said the move will reduce the number of matches and make it affordable to many teams. He said many self supporting teams have raised concern over the financial implication of travelling for away matches, saying the exercise is becoming difficult. In the same meeting, KBF agreed to explore the use of other courts besides Nyayo Stadium and introduce mid-week matches to hasten the league.
The move to increase the number of teams means relegated sides from both the men's Premier League and lower division have been reinstated and new ones brought on board. Amoko is currently working on a tentative fixtures to be ratified by the stakeholders for ratification.
