KENYA : Eagle Wings win bronze at Continental championship
Zone V representatives Eagle Wings of Kenya won bronze medal at this year’s Africa Women Cup Championship that folded up on Friday in Meknes, Morocco.
They beat Nigerian side First Deepwater 67-64 in their third place playoff. Wings led 41-32 at the breather following 20-15 and 21-17 wins in the first two quarters.
The second half belonged to the Nigerians who won the third and fourth quarters 11-9 and 21-17 respectively. Natalie Akinyi scored 16 points while Rose Ouma added 14 for Wings.
Deepwater never walked home empty handed as they scooped the fairplay award. Wings lost 50-76 to eventual winners Interclube of Angola in the semifinals.
The match was a replay of their Group B encounter which the Angolans had won 69-41. In the quarterfinals, Wings beat fellow Kenyan side USIU 83-66.
The final match pitted two Angolan clubs, Primeiro De Agosto and Interclube, with the latter winning 61-60. This was Interclube’s third title in the past four years having won in 2010 and 2011 to extend Angola’s dominance in the competition.
Primeiro beat Deepwater 79-53 in the semifinals to book a spot in the final. Interclube won the first quarter 22-11 but Primeiro snatched away the second 27-15 for a one point advantage going to the breather.
Interclube bounced back with a 13-9 score in the third quarter while Primeiro took home the fourth 13-11.
USIU finished fifth out of eight teams
In the classification matches, USIU finished fifth after beating Nigeria’s Dolphins 72-67 and COD Meknes 79-63.
Meknes was sixth having beaten fellow Moroccan side IR Tanger 63-56. The seventh position went to Tanger for beating Dolphins 62-59 as the Nigerian side finished eighth overall.
The two Kenyan sides now shift focus to the final leg of the Kenya Basketball Federation league. USIU play KPA in the best-of-five playoffs final while Wings confront Sprite Storms in the third place playoff.
