KENYA : Dankind Are NBA Champs After Running Over Jkuat
Dankind Academy are the 2013 Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA) men champions after beating Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUATS) 40-37 in a closely fought Game Three encounter at the Nyayo Stadium gymnasium.
Dominant coach John Coffino charges won the title on a clean note by sweeping Jkuat 3-0 in the best of five finals series. Dankind had romped to a 43-22 Game One win before posting 56-41 victory in Game Two.
The encounter got off to an explosive start with the 'Straycats' aware that nothing except a win would force Game Four and give them a chance to keep the series alive. The combination of forwards Emmanuel Atega, James Ongwae and James Mathiang played a key role to ensure Coffino's boys won the title in only their debut.
By the end of the third quarter, JKUAT pulled to within 29-36 advantage but Dankind refused to be cowed as they frustrated every effort by the losers to mount a come back. Dankind Academy's leading scorer Emmanuel Atega collected a game high of 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Mathiang contributed another 10 points. JKUATS were led by Nick Oloo who nailed 10 with Guyton Kijuba posting 8 in that loss. Both teams will continue playing in the league next year as they failed to secure promotion during the provincial play-offs held in Mombasa.
Ulinzi "Blades" had earlier won the ladies title after they beat self supporting Footprints 3-0. The two teams gained automatic promotion to the women's Premier League.
