It all went according to script even if eighth-placed Charging Rhino gave title contenders UCU Canons a scare before succumbing 79-70. Kenyan centre Desmond Owili recovered from the near no-show in the 65-63 loss to Warriors with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Consequently, UCU improved to 16-3 and still harbour faint hopes of toppling DMark Power, now third, from the summit ahead of the playoffs.
Power have a 16-2 record, a game in hand on UCU and two on Warriors, currently second. Power also beat UCU during the first round by nine points in case head to head comes into the picture. But, if Owili was outstanding, Sunday belonged to Jude Ochen – the guard scoring 33 points in Warriors’ 113-63 rout of Heaters.
Ochen, a two-time champion with Warriors, has always come up with this kind of performance, albeit inconsistently. His haul included scoring 7 for 18 from downtown and 4 for 6 from two-point range to lift Warriors to 15-5 in second.
Henry Malinga added 23 and 14 rebounds, Ronnie Kasewu had 19 and 14, Ivan Enabu 16 and Colin Mukiza 10 as Heaters wilted.
Warriors’ 100 was their first of the season and third overall, the other two having been scored by UCU.
Top four
Elsewhere, Ndejje University Angels and KIU Titans continued to push for places in the top four at the expense of City Oilers.
Geoffrey Soro scored 22 points as Ndejje beat Vegetarian 65-53 whereas KIU followed by Friday’s win over the Oilers with another victory.
They thrashed the relegation-bound Miracle Eagles 82-46 to better their record to 13-6 in fifth.
Fourth-placed Ndejje are 14-5. Oilers are 13-6 and lie sixth.
