NAMIBIA : Basketball Is Alive and Well in Tsumeb
Windhoek — The Tsumeb Basketball Club hosted a very successful basketball tournament in the copper town last weekend , October 26-27. Namibia Basketball Federation (NBF) Development Officer, Francina Amakali, was the chief organizer of the tourney and assured that the NBF would continue working hard to save basketball from dying a natural death in Namibia.
The tournament consisted of six male teams and four female teams, led by Rebhawks combined team (Rebells and Tomahawk from Windhoek), Leopard from Ongwediva, Bullets from Walvis Bay, G-Town from Grootfontein, Osire from Osire Camp in Otjiwarongo, Titans from Tsumeb, Redhawks and Polytechnic girls.
Rebhawks finished tops in the male competition and was followed by Leopard in second place, while the Bullets put up a courageous performance to clinch third place. In the female event, Redhawks managed to maintain their good game as they finished first in the ladies competition, while Leopard girls trailed in second place and the Polytechnic girls had to settle for a consolation third place.
Dr Nderecha of the Alpha Clinic sponsored the tournament. Nderecha promised that Alpha Clinic would try by all means to make the tournament an annual event, as organizers of the Copper Festival Games have over the years omitted basketball from the games. Hungry Lion also supported the event through providing shades and other materials.
