UGANDA : City Oilers recover, UCU go top with century

KAMPALA-City Oilers were expected to beat Vegetarian in the Airtel National Basketball League on Sunday to temporarily forget the no-show against UCU Canons 48 hours prior.
The 90-61 result may not deliver toe feel-good factor immediately but it was important for the newcomers to keep their reputation intact.

They had to beat the second-from-bottom side in a way that re-assures their self-confidence ahead of the clash with DMark Power this Friday. Kami Kabange led the way, pouring a season-high 35 points and nine rebounds in the one-sided affair that could have passed for practice at YMCA court.
Guard Jimmy Enabu contributed 17 as the two re-asserted their positions as Oilers’ go-to options on offense.
Winning is not the only target for the teams at the top in games against the bottom sides as there is also demand for them to have as many blow-outs as possible.
By improving their record to 9-4 after the 79-59 loss to UCU, only UCU 11-2, Power 10-1 and Riham Warriors 9-2) have better records at this stage than the Oilers. “Our target remains limiting the number of losses in the second round to three,” Oilers coach Mandy Juruni said.

Worries over their ability to score beyond Kabange and Enabu will remain, however, as Samuel Kalwanyi’s 11 points didn’t represent sufficient support for the two.

Like Oilers, UCU were expected to beat bottom side Miracle Eagles without engaging second gear. Obliterate they did, winning their tie 110-56.

The 110 is the highest score by a team in the league this season.
It’s also the second time UCU, now table leaders ahead of Power, have managed three figures. The last time, they beat Galaxy Falcons 101-91 and the university side are the only ones to have crossed 100 this season.
Miracle are no doubt the worst team in the league and Cyrus Kiviri’s 19 points off the bench, including going 5 for 5 from inside the perimeter, put the writing on the Wall.
