KENYA : USIU Tigers fall to Urunani

  • A late basket denied Kenya’s United States International University- Africa, USIU-A, men team victory after losing 61-60 to Burundian side Urunani in their opening match at the Zone V club championships on Tuesday evening.
The students showed great resilience to miss out on the win by a point after trailing 32-22 at halftime.
It would have been dismissed as a match lost by a huge margin but the halftime pep talk worked for the Kenyans who pushed Urunani hard in the second half.
Vice captain Kevin Macharia top scored for USIU with 19 points while captain Christian Mulumba added 14 and 13 for Victor Bosire.
Ndikumana Selemeni had 12 points for Urunani with Renilde Ndayizigiye and Hirwa James added 11 and 10 points respectively.
It was double win for Burundi as another local side New Star beat Tanzania’s Vijana City Bulls 91-52 in the second match. Action resumes on Wednesday with USIU taking on champions Espoir of Rwanda.
It will be a tough match for the Kenyan side considering Espoir won their first match beating Urunani 60-41.
The match has a lot of significance because a loss for USIU will further complicate their mathematics while a win for Espoir will guarantee them a semifinal place.
Tanzania’s Vijana City Bulls will play against Uganda’s Riham Warriors in the second match. No Kenyan team will be in action on Wednesday when two fixtures are played.
APR of Rwanda will face Don Bosco from Tanzania while host Berco Stars, fresh from their 77-71 loss to USIU Flames, will entertain Uganda’s KCCA Leopards.
Collated Fixtures: Men- USIU vs Espoir (RWA), Vijana (TZ) vs Riham Warriors (UGA); Women- APR (RWA) vs Don Bosco (TZ), Berco Stars (BDI) vs KCCA (UGA).
