KENYA : Eagle Wings, USIU meet In Zone V Final

For the second year running, it will be an all-Kenyan women final at the Zone V club championships when Eagle Wings and United States International University- Africa, USIU-A, meet on Saturday evening in Bujumbura, Burundi.
Eagle Wings is the defending champion after beating another Kenyan side Kenya Ports Authority, KPA, 77-54 in last year’s final played in Uganda.
The appearance for the two teams in the final means that Kenya will continue with its dominance in the regional women basketball.
Prior to Eagle Wings installation, KPA was the defending champions and it is obvious that for the third year in a row the next Zone V champion will come from Kenya.
Wings qualified for the final after a 53-44 semifinal win over KCCA Leopards from Uganda while USIU beat local side Les Gazelle 70-26.
It was a sweet revenge for the students against the Burundians who had earlier disputed the fielding of certain players by the Kenyan team.
In the group stages, Wings beat APR of Rwanda 76-31, saw off Tanzanian side Don Bosco 86-35 and Les Gazelles of Burundi 66- 49. USIU beat Uganda’s KCCA 60-43 and Burundi’s Berco Stars 76-71.
Wings will go to the final match with an edge over USIU by the virtue of being the defending champions.
Furthermore, the Thomas Olumbo ladies have won the last three meetings between the two sides and their standings in the KBF league speak volumes.
They are currently joint top on 21 points with KPA while USIU is eighth with 15 points and having played one match less.
Captain Silalei Shani, point guard Samba Mjomba, Angela Akoth and national team call-up Annerose Atieno are the key player for the champions.
Their bench power is equally powerful with players like Linda Nyikuli and Lucy Machuma who all have ample international exposure.
Rwanda Espoir face Burundi Urunani in men's final
For USIU, Captain Hilda Indasi is the obvious team leader and will be called upon to steer the side to victory over their Kenyan opponents.
Burundian Cynthia Irankunda and Sarah Chan from Sudan, who are the foreigners in the side, will be of great value to the team as well as Zipporah Adhiambo and Linda Mfuchi who have impressed so far.
In the men category, Rwanda’s Espoir will have the chance to defend their title when they play local side Urunani in the final.
It will be a rematch of last year's final when Espoir won 90-39. Espoir beat New Star of Uganda 65-63 in the semifinals while Urunani beat Riham Warriors from Uganda 70-56. Kenya’s USIU finished fifth after beating Vijana from Tanzania 52-47 in their playoff match.
