Nigerian Basketball League - Union Bank Secures Double Victory Over Leaders, Dodan Warriors
Coach Chris Okoh of Union Bank Basketball club of Lagos has described his club's 94-80 victory over city rivals, Dodan Warriors, as its best, so far, in the ongoing DStv/Premier league.
Mr. Okoh stated this on Saturday, shortly after the Atlantic Conference match. He said the victory was his team's best result because Warriors were currently the best in the league.
Union Bank had earlier in their first match on Friday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium Lagos, also defeated Warriors 70-53.
However, in spite of the two losses, Warriors still top the eight-team league table with 14 wins from 20 matches, while Union Bank is closely behind with 13 wins.
"The two teams, during the match, lived up to expectation as the two top teams in the conference. We gave our spectacular performance to the delight of the fans that came to watch the match.
"However, my players were astonishing and such performance was the best they displayed so far in the league. I am very happy about how they rose up to the occasion against Dodan Warriors.
"We had to come out strongly this way, having dropped two games in our previous match against Lagos Islanders a week ago.
"I congratulate every player on my team and we know we just will take every game as it comes, and hopefully, be disciplined in our objectives," Okoh said.
Louis Edem, Union Bank forward, said that it was a good win as the team changed its attitude towards winning, having lost to Lagos Islanders a week ago.
"We knew we had to pick this win and we had to come out and play hard and also knowing about Dodan Warriors physical style of play.
"We played very well and we are happy at what we achieved at the end," Edem said.
Reacting to the losses, Coach Peter Ahmedu of Dodan Warriors said that it was a great lesson because his players were becoming over confident.
Police Baton of Lagos, also on Saturday, proved they were still good enough for the league as they defeated visiting and defending champions, Royal Hoopers of Port Harcourt, 64-52.
Royal Hoopers had defeated Police Baton 63-59 in their first match on Friday.
However, the victory was not enough to lift Police Baton up as they still remained in the last position of the league.
Police Baton currently face relegation as they have lost a total of 15 of the 20 matches played so far in the league.
Comets of Lagos, also coming from a first leg encounter loss to Customs of Lagos, defeated Customs 68-65 in a well contested second leg encounter.
The Atlantic Conference league matches continue on July 5 and July 6, at the same venue.
"My players lost the match because they were becoming over confident, having recorded some good number of victories. So, the loss was a good lesson for us," Ahmedu said.
