NIGERIA : Nigeria Basketball League - Customs Upset Union Bank in Atlantic Conference
Customs defeated the Atlantic Conference League leaders.
Coach Mohammed Abba of Customs club of Lagos on Saturday said that his team's victory over Union Bank of Lagos in the ongoing DSTV Premier League would solidify their growing confidence.
Customs sent a shock wave through the Atlantic Conference with the 84-73 routing of Union Bank, the Nigeria basketball league leaders.
Abba told the News Agency Nigeria in Lagos that the team was trying to make up for its poor start in the competition.
"We are currently playing the best games of our campaign; our strategy is essentially to be on the defensive and to see how we can get our opponents to fall easily.
"We are not forcing the game anymore; we are taking our time to make our shots count and most especially, we don't allow easy turnovers.
"We are seventh on the league table of eight and hopefully we hope to climb even higher," he said.
Meanwhile, Ayinla Johnson, the coach of Union Bank, lamented that his players did not play to instructions.
"We cannot afford to play the way we did and expect to win in the end, the team did not react to simple instructions and that cost us the match.
"Even when we were up by ten points, we allowed some unforced errors in the third quarter which Customs capitalised on.
"We will play Customs hard and ensure that we pick the second leg encounter, and consolidate our lead at the top," Johnson said.
In another match played at the Lagos centre, Lagos Islanders defeated Oluyole Warriors of Ibadan 73-64 to compensate for their earlier losses.
Coach Lateef Erinfolami said that the team had to get back to their winning ways, and some minor adjustments needed to be made.
"We had to get back to our winning ways; we lost four games in a row and we were slipping down the league table.
"This sometimes happens and our next target now is to defeat Oluyole in the second leg encounter," Erinfolami said.
Reacting to the outcome of the match, Coach Yemi Abiodun of Oluyole said that his team's loss was unexpected.
"We will defeat Islanders when we meet in the second leg; I am not happy about my team's performance and will not put any blame on anybody.
"We just have to come back stronger and show why we are among the favourites to pick a final four ticket from the Atlantic conference," he said.
