KENYA : USIU beat Safe Spaces, Strathmore unbeaten in Div 1

  • United States International University- Africa, USIU-A, hit the century mark to register the biggest win of the weekend beating Safe Spaces 106-45 in a women premier league match played at the Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium, Sunday.
Captain Hilda Indasi had 22 points while Sarah Chan had 20 for the students. Florence Mbithe was Space’s top scorer with 21.
USIU prevailed in all quarters winning 23-11, 31-13, 28-7 and 24-14 respectively. Kenya Ports Authority, KPA, outplayed and snatched away all the points from hosts Mennonite with an 83-12 win at the same venue.
Mennonite could not match the experience and mastery of the game displayed by the Dockers as their search for a maiden win this season remained elusive.
KPA won all the quarters 25-4, 26-2, 14-3 and 18-3. Millicent Anyango and Lucy Onyango top scored for KPA with 13 and 12 points respectively.
Points for Mennonite were scored by Mary Wangui, Catherine Onyango and Evelyn Nabwire who had three points each while Tabitha Mutheu had two.
Abigail Ogechi managed one point. In the men premier, KPA struggled to beat Mennonite 70-63 in one of the toughest matches of the weekend.
Felix Odhiambo notched 14 points for Mennonite with Ariel Okal hitting 21 for KPA. The first two quarters went to Mennonite 19-18 and 15-11 to enjoy a five point lead at halftime.
The Coastal side retuned for the second half rejuvenated and managed to win the third and fourth quarters 11-7 and 30-22 to seal a remarkable comeback.
The other match pitting USIU Tigers and Lions was postponed owing to lack of proper lighting in the gymnasium and will be played at a later date.
    Strathmore overcome Pirates
In division one, Strathmore University maintained their unbeaten run with an extra time 67-62 win over Kenyatta University Pirates after deadlocking 55-55 in regulation time.
The first quarter went to Pirates 17-15 and second to Strathmore 14-8. This gave Strathmore a four point lead going to the second half.
Even though Pirates coach Gitau Waringo seemed to get it wrong in his substitutions, his side prevailed and managed to tie the game for extra time. Pirates won the third and fourth quarters 12-10 and 18-16.
With two minutes of the fourth quarter remaining and scores tied at 45-45, Strathmore seemed the stronger of the two sides but their game plan started to crumble.
This is after point guard Nyangosia Onyango was ejected on five fouls slowing down their play.
They struggled on without one of their key players and found themselves in trouble again with five seconds of play remaining.
Peter Shilton fouled Benson Moibi as the scores read 55-54 in Strathmore’s favor with Pirates earning two free-throws to kill off the game.
However, Moibi missed one to tie the match.
In extra time, it was Pirates’ turn to feel the pinch after Peter Ameso and Gilbert Obiero were both ejected on five fouls each to allow Strathmore all the advantage.
The Tony Olala boys never frustrated as they went on to win 12-7. Upper Hill was victorious against World Hope registering a hard-fought 77-68 win.
Collated Results: Mennonite 63 KPA 70, Strathmore University 67 KU Pirates 62, Mennonite 12 KPA 83, Upper Hill 77 World Hope 68, USIU-A106 Safe Spaces 45.
