UGANDA : Varsities divided on ‘home comfort’

University teams have always wanted to host their Airtel National Basketball games at the campuses and not make the routine journeys to the usual venues.
UCU Canons (two teams – men and women), Ndejje University Angels and KIU Titans are scheduled to host one another. Ndejje are not interested, according to their coach Walker Obedi.
“In agreement with the clubs, the universities will host each other,” Fuba publicist Ali Balunywa said upon releasing the 2013 fixtures.
“Fuba will work with the universities to make those games affordable to fans.”
Only games involving the universities will take place at the campuses while they still have to play the rest of the teams at YMCA and the Lugogo MTN Arean.
Barring a miracle, the games will be free of charge as none of the universities has a perimeter fence around the basketball courts.
However, while UCU welcome the idea, Ndejje want debate. “As Ndejje, we will jump because it’s not logical because of the financial implications of playing in Luweero,” Obedi said.
“It’s not cost effective for us. There are better things we can think of. It could be a good idea but unless sponsors provide money for it, we are out,” he ranted. “Most of the players on the team study at the Kampala campus so playing in Luweero isn’t good. We will stay at YMCA and Lugogo. It must be debated further”.
On the contrary, UCU are elated. “Big time! It will help us bring the game to our fans which they deserve,” UCU coach Nicholas Natuhereza noted.
