UGANDA : Three KCCA teams enter inter-cities

The annual inter-cities basketball tournament gets underway today with hosts, Kampala, fielding three teams – two men and one for women.
The Lugogo MTN Arena will be the venue for the tournament which has attracted over 10 cities. The tournament was initially set for Dar es Salaam only for the Tanzanians to pull out at the eleventh hour.
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) stepped in as hosts for a second successive year.
The draws were to be conducted by press time as per the arrival of the foreign teams. “We have three teams from South Sudan, two from Somalia, one from Somaliland, two from Kenya, Dar es Salaam and Mwanza from Kenya,” tournament official Joy Olinga said.
Entebbe, Jinja and Mukono will also take part with today’s opening ceremony to be graced by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.
It’s an opportunity for the national team to play in a competitive tournament outside the confines of the annual Zone V event.
“One team is mainly of established national team players and the other is for the next generation who are under 23 and will take the mantle in future,” Olinga added.
DMark Power coach Bernes Ankunda will handle the national team, the bulk of whom were in Dar last year for the Zone V whereas national coach Mandy Juruni is in charge of the development side.
In the women’s draw, KCCA Leopards will play as Kampala whereas UCU Lady Canons take the Mukono slot in what should be a nail-biting week-long event.
