KENYA : Maseno, Upper Hill Win Opening Duels

Five-time Kenya Secondary School Sports Association basketball champions Maseno School and Upper Hill School yesterday opened their hunt for the national title with wins as the the Term One Games at Mang'u High started yesterday.
Upper Hill, representing Nairobi Metropolitan, ran riot - humiliating debutants Kapsabet of Nakuru region 97-22 in a one-sided game.
Maseno, the 2010 winners, however, were forced to sweat against a gallant Shimba Hills side before prevailing 46-42 in a closely fought Pool "A" preliminary match.
Upper Hill won the first quarter against Kapsabet 27-8 to signify their intent right from the word go. They claimed the second 20-8, rocked the third 19-1 and the last 31-2.
Joseph Ongoro scored a game high 18 points for Upper Hill, while Emmanuel Najura and Joseph Njeru contributed 11-a-piece.
Collins Kimutai topped the scoring for Kapsabet with eight points. Kipchirchir added five.
In Maseno's match the Nyanza school garnered quick early points to lead 5-0, 5-2, 7-2, 9-2, 9-5 and 9-7 before Shimba rallied back into the game to draw 10-10 at the buzzer.
Shimba shocked the former champions as they rallied to a 10-8 win in the second quarter to take a 20-18 lead at the close of the second quarter.
They were also 13-12 winners in the third quarter but could not hold onto their lead as they fell 9-16 in the last quarter, dashing their hopes of sailing into the semis.
Trevor Gari scored a game high 16 points for Maseno followed by Shapiro Nyamweya with nine. Brian Otieno topped the score sheet for Shimba with 12 points as Tilfin Otieno and Hussein Mohammed contributed nine and six each.
Bahati of Nakuru hit Kirinyaga of Northern 52-43 in the first girls Pool "A" basketball game while Shimba Hills of Mombasa reigned over Ogle of Garissa 147-2 in the second.
