US Ambassador to The Gambia Edward M. Alford has revealed that there is need for more basketball facilities to make a massive development stride and promotion of Gambia basketball.“I think the country needs more facilities such as basketball courts, coaching among others,” he said.
Ambassador Alford made these remarks last Saturday at the Independence Stadium Basketball Court where he graced the opening of an All-Star Basketball competition, where the Gambia Armed Forces female team defeated Saint’s by 9-8 points.
The Green team also beat Yellow team by 60-57 points.
Ambassador Alford expressed happiness after receiving an award of certificate of appreciation by the Gambia Basketball Association for the US Embassy’s support to basketball.“I am a big basketball fan, which is the American culture, Central American sport,” the US Ambassador said, adding that basketball is played everywhere in the US.
In just late last December, the US Embassy sponsored a 3 on 3 basketball tournament which saw players from different ages displaying their talents in an initiative aimed at empowering the youth through basketball and sensitizing them on AIDS.
Youth and Sports Minister Alieu K. Jammeh acknowledged the basketball federation for their good work, saying his aim is to decentralize and disseminate all sporting disciplines across the country.
