NIGERIA : NBBF Plans More Championships for Local Players
The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) at the weekend announced that more local competitions have been lined up for basketball players plying their trade on the local scene as part of measures to ensure that those playing in the Nigerian league are adequately groomed to pick shirts in the various national teams.
President of the NBBF, Mallam Tijanin Umar, who disclosed this at a media briefing to herald the dunk off of the 2013 Zenith Bank Nigeria Basketball Women League in Abuja, said one of the championships, the National Women Open Championship will dunk off in October, shortly after the end of the women league.
He advised the home-based women basketball players to take their career so as to be considered for national assignments by the national team coaches.
He also announced that the federation has entered into a long-term sponsorship deal with Zenith Bank, which will see the winer of the ongoing league take home N1 million, while the runners-up and third placed teams pocketing N750, 000 and N500, 000 respectively.
"My joy is that the women are going to have more tournaments this year. It is not going to be the Zenith Bank League alone, as soon as the league is concluding we will commence the National Women Open Championship. I just want to inform you that this year's edition is going to be tougher and so I advise you to really brace up," Umar said.
