GAMBIA : Pa Modou Sarr Memorial Tourney Underway

The annual Pa Modou Sarr Basketball Tournament, the only basketball tournament of note when the national league was in limbo, continues to gather pace with action entering its third week.
Following the engagement of the teams in Group A the previous week, the baton has now been handed over to Group B. In the game between Brikama and Serekunda East, the latter overwhelming defeated the West Coast Region Side 48-39.
Speaking to Observer Sports, Abdoulie Secka, a member of the organising committee of the tourney, said so far he is happy with the tournament. "This is the ninth edition of the tournament. We have been organising it since 2005. Every year everything goes well. The tournament started on the 3rd of March. So far so good, all the teams are coming. Most of the players are willing to play. As usual (the level of competition) is good," he remarked.
Commenting on the resumption of the National Basketball League for the first time in nearly a decade, Secka said: "The league was totally silent and this was the only tournament going on for the past eight years or so. For this year, thank God the new (executive) committee has dicided to bring back the league. The league plays its matches on Fridays and Saturdays, but Sundays belong to the Pa Modou Sarr Memorial Tournament. The same players playing in this tournament are the ones playing in the league. We are calling on to people to let them always remember this very tournament, it has been here well before and we are always praying that it will continue."
Pa Modou Sarr was a Gambian basketball player who died in a car crash in the USA in 2004. He was playing for the Navarro College basketball team at the time of his death
