GAMBIA : Basketball Association Clarifies

The Gambia Basketball Association (GBA) has explained that the final moments that overshadowed Brikama's 36-35 loss to YMCA at the weekend was due to lack of understanding on the part of the West Coast Region team.
Following the defeat, Brikama coach Lamin Touray told Observer Sports that it will be hard for his side to win the league because 'every time they (officials) call against Brikama'. "We don't know the reason they call against us. Any game we play against teams from the Kombos, we have difficulties. We have lots of fouls committed but it doesn't matter the game was over. The time was up, so blow the whistle," he said.
Brikama lodged a protest to the organising committee of the Basketball League following their weekend defeat. But clarifying the controversy surrounding the rant by the Brikama coach through its secretary general, Abdoulie Jallow, the GBA hit out at the team for their behaviour.
"What happened was a misunderstanding. Brikama officials and players were coming to the table trying to ask for time and there are people by rules who are allowed to come to the desk and ask for time-out. The referee thought that was the game they were playing to delay the time and we decided to stop the time.
It was one minute before the end of the game. Now, we are all humans, I am not blaming the referee. We saw them coming back and forth at that time they were ready to make a change but he thought they were going to do the same thing they were doing, so he, (referee) decided that the time to be stopped; by that time Brikama was leading," Jallow said.
The GBA secretary geral added: "When the game resumed, the controversy worsened when about ten seconds left in the game, there was a foul against Brikama and now Brikama by that time was leading by one point and the guy had two shots by that time since it was running clock the time had runned down and the whistle was blown that the game was over. As far as the regulations are concerned this guy had to take two shots.
In this case if he takes the two shots and makes both of them the game goes to YMCA. That is what happened and that led to the shouting and yelling and it's unfortunate that they were using very abusive languages and some of them were even directed towards us the (officials). We will take the right decision and we will not accept indiscipline."
Jallow further dismissed Brikama's claim that they are usually victimised whenever they play against teams from the Greater Banjul Area. "This is a new association whatever must have happened ten or seven years ago, those referees and officials have all gone. So how that can filter to us that we have never treated them unfairly. As far as we are concerned this is news to us.
"There are clauses in the constitution that look into indiscipline, they need to look at it. That's why we took them through it. We explained to them before the beginning of the league. So it is no excuse for anybody to come and violate any provision of that constitution," he concluded.
