UGANDA : Basketball Has Never Been This Fun

Right from the Wandegeya police station all the way up to Buganda road at the Multichoice offices, cars stretched on either side of the road.
In the middle of the road was a nonstop flow of pedestrians, some superbly dressed, others would give clowns a run for their money; they had so many colours you would think they were moving Christmas trees. If someone didn't know what the occasion was, the commotion outside YMCA grounds would definitely get them curious.
It was the second weekend of the annual Friday Night Lights fun basketball tournament. The fun tournament that kicked off three years ago as a season curtain raiser has become the best league opener in any sport on the Ugandan calendar. Kampalans love to party and drink and the organizers of the tournament - Castle Lite beer are really exploiting that to the fullest.
On Friday February 1, the night had performances from Ruyonga, The Mith, and Eddy Kenzo, plus a flash mob performance courtesy of Samsung. Last Friday, they gave the fans a shocker; Samsung offered a 52-inch plasma screen for any fan that could make a half court centre shot. Unfortunately no one could walk away with it. The screen will be returned next Friday, along with a home theatre system for anyone who can make a free throw shot while blind folded.
As the teams - Legends, Flash, Malinga, Ikong, Kasewu and Kobs - battled for the Shs 500,000 each, Navio treated fans to his latest hits, as the rest of the crowd partied away to the deejay's tunes. Organizers have promised to have a surprise politician taking part next Friday.
