TANZANIA : Coach writes off Dar teams at Zone meet

Dar es Salaam. Former national basketball team coach Hillary Ndibalema has written off Tanzania’s chances of performing well at the forthcoming Zone V Championship.
The championship which will tip off on January 21 will feature the likes of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda who have been dominant lately.
Ndibalema told The Citizen that the national teams (men and women) will be mere participants following poor preparations.
“I can’t see Tanzania finishing among the top three teams in the forthcoming tournament, our neighbours are much stronger than we are,” said the ex-Vijana Stars coach.
The coach appreciated the ongoing efforts to promote the sport, but stressed that without corporate firms’ involvement in owning or sponsoring clubs, basketball will continue to be on its downward trend.
“Tanzania was a force to reckon with in the past because almost all teams were owned by companies, so there was discipline, players were paid well and training was proper,” he said.
“I would like to advice the Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) to market the sport further and encourage different companies to invest in our teams,” he advised.
Lately, the Tanzanian teams have been competing in various international events, but without any big feat to write home about.
