Kenya Commercial Bank has withdrawn its financial support of basketball club KCB Lions who finished third in last years’ Kenya Basketball Federation Premier League season. The club has been under the company support since 1976 when the Lion’s was formed.
Michezoafrika.com can exclusively report that the sponsors KCB have already written a letter to the local Federation (KBF) informing them of the latest development. KBF officials have acknowledged receipt of the letter.
Other teams supported by Kenya Commercial Bank include Rugby Lions, KCB soccer team that participates in the Kenya Premier League and the KCB volleyball team that has for the last three years finished 3rd behind Kenya Prisons and Kenya Pipeline at both the domestic Kenya Volleyball Federation Leagues and African competitions. All the other teams were formed after the Basketball team which served as the flagship sports team for the bankers.
KCB Lions is one of the best performing clubs in the Kenyan Premier League and has won four titles in the past 8 years. Apart from finishing within the top three brackets in the past three seasons, KCB Lions basketball team has represented Kenya in regional Zone 5 competitions in Kampala, Burundi and Rwanda.
Last season , KCB led the KBF league standings for the better part of the season going unbeaten throughout the first leg. They however failed to reach the finals after losing to defending champions Coop Bank in the play offs semi finals but went ahead to take a Bronze finish after defeating KPA 88-69 in 3rd and 4th play offs.
