Basketball in The Gambia can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the first national league got underway for the first time in nearly a decade on Saturday evening at the Manneh Sillah Memorial Court, the home of Gambian basketball.
The sport that last played its national league in The Gambia in 2005 resumed with a double header at the weekend. In the first official match also under the leadership of the Gambia Basketball Association's new president, Muhammed Papa Njie, Brikama beat Sports House 37 points to 23 before Wallidan narrowly defeated Gambia Armed Forces by 23 points to 16.
Speaking to this reporter, Papa Njie, the Basketball Association (GBA) president, said that he felt honoured that the league has finally kicked off after eight years without one, and thanked his entire executive for their efforts.
Matches will continue this weekend on Friday at the Independence Stadium with games between Saints and Serrekunda West while YMCA will battle it out with Serrekunda East. Matches will begin at 4: 30 pm
