KIU Titans and A1 Challenge overcame their disappointing semifinal exits to clinch third place in the Fuba League on Saturday at YMCA court.
KIU, beaten 3-2 by Falcons, edged fellow university side UCU Canons 68-67 to cap a remarkable season in which they also finished third at the end of the regular season. Former women’s champions A1 Challenge beat Magic Stormers 56-53 in a topsy-turvy game despite Carol Nayofwono’s game-high 13 points for the latter.
A1 were swept 3-0 by two-time defending champions UCU Lady Canons in the semifinals. Fuba should even be more pleased that all teams that were knocked out in the semifinals showed up for the one-off third place playoff across the four divisions. This game has previously caused controversy as UCU, after a 3-2 loss to Warriors, failed to show up for it last year, handing Miracle Eagles a walkover.
UCU, who finished fifth at the end of the regular before beating DMark Power 2-1 in the quarters and losing 3-2 to Warriors in the semis, had Boniface Okello score 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Martin Okwako added 10 and 12 rebounds and Sudi Ulanga contributed 19 and seven.
