UGANDA : ANBL playoffs: Falcons stave off Warriors to make first stride

Falcons over came a slow start to see off Warriors 75-62 in game 1 of the best of seven ANBL playoff finals series on Sunday night at YMCA.
Leading by just 5 points going into the fourth quarter, Falcons (1-0) opened the final period with an 8-2 run to take their lead into double figures with 7:09. Geoffrey Omondi scored 10 of his 12 points in the final 10 minutes as the Falcons ran away from the Warriors (0-1) finishing off a sluggish evening with a flurry. “We were sluggish and indisciplined. We needed to adjust and we did exactly that” Falcons coach, Gad Eteu said. Philip Ameny and Steven Omony scored 10 points apiece and Peter Elungat scored game high 13 points to lead Falcons.
Both teams executed and Warriors were more active on the offensive board but couldn’t put the ball in the basket shooting 18-for-72 from the floor compared to Falcons’ 25-for-58. Warriors’ offense dipped more in the fourth quarter and were constantly playing catch-up, but inevitably didn’t, getting out scored 24-15. Warriors had flash moments in the opening three quarters taking leads several times but Falcons made quick responses and didn’t let them last. “We lacked consistency in the game. We had a lot of lapses” Warriors, coach Manday Juruni said. Norman Blick paced Warriors with 12 points and Ivan Enabu added 10 points and 5 assists. Game 2 is on Wednesday night at Lugogo and will be a dicey one.
Mean while UCU Lady Canons beat KCCA Leopards 48-41 in the ladies game 1 of the finals. Moreen Amoding scored 9 of her game high 20 points in the final quarter to pace the Lady Canons. Purity Adhiambo, the only other UCU player who scored in double figures added 15 points that went along with 18 boards. Martha Soigi was the only KCCA that score in double figures with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Flavia Oketcho was limited to 8 points, shooting 3-for-19 from the field.
