The past weekend was a good outing for both the USIU teams (Tigers and Flames) after each team won its game 1 of the play-off semis. On Saturday the Tigers defeated Mombasa based Kenya Ports Authority 104-89 in a match that went into added time after the two teams drew 85-85 in the regular time.
For the ladies team the Flames duo of Hilda Indasi and Cynthia Irankunda simply outclassed the Co-op Bank women’s team defense when the two sides met on Sunday afternoon. Indasi had 22 points(sinking in 7 of 8 three point shots attempted) while Irankunda gave the Thika Road based students 19 points to give USIU a comfortable 69-55 win in the game one of play-offs semis.
Indasi says her teammates have been awesome this season and adds that the best reward they can give themselves is to ensure they win the title for the first time.
“Everyone is determined to reach the finals and in the end win this title. The team has worked so hard and winning the trophy will be sweet Christmas for all of us. I attribute our success this season to good team work and everyone being there for each other.” She says.
Indasi adds that “We need to maintain our concentration to the final whistle in the semis then wait for the next match in the final but first a match at a time. Coop Bank is not an easy side but it is good we have the first win.”
Celia Assila was Co-op Bank’s top scorer with 15 points in the match that saw USIU win all the four quarters (1st) 15-12, (2nd) 19-16, (3rd) 19-17 and (4th) 16-10. The two teams will face it off once more next weekend but with the kind of play witnessed on Sunday USIU are the favorites of the two to head into the finals.
In the other semi-final Defending Champions in the women’s category Eagle Wings managed to hold off KPA 56-49 to win game one and will be travelling to the Coast for the game two in the coming weekend
