The KBF Premier League Play-offs matches played on Saturday saw table turns for KCB Lions and USIU Flames after they lost their respective matches to force a game three for both teams. KCB Lions were against 2011 Defending Champions Co-op Bank while the Flames were against the Co-op Bank ladies team.
The Lions could not replicate last weekend’s win going down 51-59 to a rejuvenated Co-op Bank whom they had beaten 59-67. Co-op Bank won the 1st quarter 18-15 and then extended their lead in the 2nd quarter 17-9 to put the half time scores at 35-24.
In the 3rd quarter KCB who missed the services of Ancentas Wafula who did not feature in the match managed to hold their opponents to a 11-11 draw and win the last quarter 11-14 but it was a little too late and the two teams will meet on Sunday for game 3. Joseph Khaemba and James Mwangi gave Co-op Bank 12 and 10 points respectively while Tobias Onyango gave the Lions 15 points. The winner of Sunday’s match will automatically head into the finals.
In the ladies match Hilda Indasi’s 19 points could not help the Flames to earn an automatic spot in the finals. The Flames lost 55-57 to Co-op Bank and the two teams are now tied 1-1 in the best of 3 series. The students had beaten the Bankers 69-55 last weekend. Co-op Bank took the 1st quarter 12-7 but was slightly held off to one point difference in the 2nd quarter (15-16) to put the half time scores at 27-23 in favor of the bankers.
The 3rd quarter saw the Flames charge their way to come a back getting 19 points to Co-op Bank’s 11 points but in the 4th quarter Co-op Bank who could not afford a loss and be eliminated managed to hold off the students and win the quarter 19-14. The two teams will also face it off on Sunday for their game 3.
Emma Nyakweba was riding on top form giving Co-op Bank 19 points the highest in the match same as Indasi. Linda Alando added 13 points for the bankers while Georgia Adhiambo and Nancy Atieno each gave the students 8 points.
The matches were played at the Nyayo Gymnasium and that will be the same venue for the game 3 matches for the two categories (KCB vs. Co-op Bank, USIU VS. Co-op Bank ladies)
