TANZANIA : Sprite Slam Basketball Final Set for Sunday in Dar es Salaam

SPRITE Slam Basketball 2012 finals will be held at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday involving six regions of Mbeya, Dodoma, Mwanza, Kilimanjaro, Arusha and hosts - Dar es Salaam.
Addressing a press conference at Leaders Club in Dar es Salaam, Coca-Cola Tanzania Assistant Brand Manager, Warda Kimaro said preparations for this event have been finalized and teams were expected to start arriving in Dar es Salaam from today. The competition started at the region level in April where players from secondary schools took part with the aim to identify basketball talents.
"The players we have on Sunday are the best representatives from the six regions and it is our hope that the finals will be competitive and exciting," she said. Coca-Cola through Sprite started sponsoring basketball in Tanzania in 2010 whereby hundreds of the youths have had an opportunity to participate in various training under the guidance of NBA players such as Hasheem Thabeet, Steve Smith and Luol Deng.
US based AND1 team also has had several matches in Tanzania under this Sprite programme. The Sunday finals will also be coloured by entertainment from high flying local Hip Hop Star Jo Makini alongside other musicians. There will also be music competition and the best performers will be awarded by Coca-Cola.
Sprite slam finals started at the regional level in April giving hundreds of secondary students an opportunity to display their basketball skills. Apart from sponsoring basketball, Coca-Cola has been funding the now popular under 17 youth football tournament known as Copa Coca-Cola embracing players from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
