TANZANIA : Arusha Crowned Sprite Slam Champions

ARUSHA regional basketball team made history over the weekend when they laboured to win the annual Sprite Slam finals for the first time. The well-attended basketball national festival involving six regions was held at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam and climaxed on Sunday.
Cheered up by supporters, Arusha played their heart out to beat favourites Dodoma 11-8 in a closely contested encounter. Both teams started the game on a quick note and the victors utilized well their scoring chances, especially in the last minutes, to win the game. Martin Asesi and Kelvin played significant role towards Arusha team's crucial victory.
The duo scored eight out of 11 points that the northern zone team needed to down the Dodoma outfit. The competition started at the region level in April where players from secondary schools took part with the aim to identify basketball talents. The players that featured in the weekend finals were selected during the regional matches held in Mbeya, Dodoma, Mwanza, Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Dar es Salaam.
The Sunday finals were also coloured by entertainment from high flying local Hip Hop Star Jo Makini alongside other musicians. Also on stage were aspiring musicians from each of the participating regions who displayed unique talents to win various prizes from Coca- Cola. Presenting trophies to winners, Coca-Cola Tanzania Assistant Brand Manager Warda Kimaro said that the aim of Sprite Slam was to create an avenue for easy identification of basketball talents in Tanzania.
