Kakamega based Masinde Muliro University were over the weekend bundled out of the KBF Premier League play-offs after suffering back to back defeats against KCB Lions. Abel Wafula’s side however is guaranteed a spot in the league next seasons and this is welcoming to Wafula.
Speaking to michezoafrika.com the tactician admitted that the level of competition at play-offs stage was very tough but was proud of his boys on putting up a fight, “At this level winning each and every game is important so you expect stiff competition and considering we were playing KCB, the team gave its best.”
On Saturday MMUST lost 72-55 to Morris Shitsama’s side while on Sunday they went down 87-54 at the Nyayo Gymnasium.
In other matches 2011 Defending Champions Co-op Bank had to sweat it out with Defence Forces side Ulinzi where they had a slim 60-59 triumph to win the first round of the best of three. The two teams will meet again next weekend and if the bankers win then they would have booked a slot in the play-off semis but if it goes to Ulinzi’s favor then they will have to meet a 3rd time to decide the who heads to semis.
In the Division One category High School students Upper Hill managed to upset KCA-University in both occasions besting them in the first round 49-42 at home (Upper Hill School) then sealing the side’s fate on Sunday at the Nyayo Gymnasium with a 55-33 win. Nairobi Aviation also booked a semi-final spot after they held off KU Pirates with a double result of 61-59 and 61-55. KAA is also another team in the semi-finals after eliminating Umoja 56-33 in the first match and 44-36 in the second.
The play-off matches will continue over the coming weekend with the Premier League’s women’s category kicking off at the same period.
