UGANDA : Crucial night for KIU in Fuba play-offs

It’s bound to be a draining evening for Nimrod Kaboha as his two KIU sides chase different targets as the Fuba Basketball League playoffs reach Game Two today.
Women’s side KIU Rangers is on the brink of elimination as they trail 1-0 in the best-of-three quarterfinals against Magic Stormers following a 43-31 loss at the Lugogo MTN Arena at the weekend.
On the other hand, men’s Division One side KIU Titans will advance to the semifinals with victory over tough-as-nails Miracle Eagles. KIU took Game One 60-52 to lead their series 1-0. Fuba have had to move the games to YMCA court as Lugogo is booked for Game Two of the ongoing National Volleyball League finals.
Eagles out-rebounded their opponents 45-28 but even that wasn’t enough. Ivan Rumanyika led the onslaught with a game-high 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The productivity of their guards is a spot of bother. Since the acquisition of Mohammed Yusuf several games into the regular season, other guards have not been as effective.
It’s either the brilliance of Yusuf, 11 points and five rebounds in Game One, that has choked them or the failure to raise their game.
“Sometimes, we let him (Yusuf) do too much so everyone should step up,” Eagles’ team manager-cum-player Chris Kyebambe said. That message should go straight into Ronald Bajunga’s heart.
Bajunga has not taken charge of games like he used to before Yusuf arrived. Their defence will be tested as KIU have descent perimeter shooters in Nelson Naju and Francis Kasekende. Njau had 10 points in Game One and Kasekende is almost bound to have more than the five he managed on Saturday.
“At this stage of the season, every team plays better than they have all season,” KIU talisman Richard Osano warned. He must choose to play inside and not outside the arc like he has done in physical games.
