KIU clinched third and condemned two-time defending champions DMark Power to fourth.
However, teams still need to complete their schedule as the regular season winds up over the next two days. Power face Stormers at YMCA court today. Victory will put the spotlight back on KIU as they play Vegetarian tomorrow. Both KIU and Power are tied at 16-5. Barring a miracle of gigantic proportions, they will finish with an identical record of 17-5.
Stormers, having won only two games, are already relegated. Therefore, this game offers Power coach Barnes Ankunda an opportunity to try out his reserves as he prepares for the match-up with UCU Canons.
Colin Mukiza, Isaac Luggudde and Zimbabwean George Runanga will be baying for minutes. Point guard Emmanuel Enabu also gets more time to recover. In the early game, Ndejje University Angels, the eighth and last team to make the playoffs, finish their regular season against basement side Rez Life.
The knee injury to talisman Geoffrey Soro two weeks ago is the only reference made to Ndejje since. Without him, coach Walker Obedi’s side beat Vegetarian 53-33 last Saturday. Soro’s sidekick Jonah Otim led them with 11 points and five rebounds. Michael Opolot also scored 11, one more than Daniel Otieno who also contributed seven rebounds.
Ndejje will play log leaders and 2009 champions Warriors in the best of three quarterfinals. Obedi relishes this. “It’s good to play against the so-called big sides. We have always challenged them,” he reckoned.
