TANZANIA : TBF calls for teams to register for Taifa Cup

Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) has called on all regions to confirm participation for the Taifa Cup, which would tip off in Tanga on October 20.
The seven-day tournament, according to TBF vice president Phares Magesa, will serve as a platform where the best players will be selected to form national teams.
Tanzania is expected to field both men and women’s national teams in the forthcoming Zone Five Fiba championship planned to take place in Dar es Salaam in December.
“We have just over three weeks before the Tanga championship gets underway, but the pace of confirmations is a bit slow, thus I urge all regions to wake up and register now.
“By confirming early, it will help the tournament organisers to draw up fixtures properly,” Magesa said.
He added: “We have provisional national team squads, but the selection is not over yet. It is our hope that coaches tasked to pick the teams will get some new faces for the teams.”
Magesa said the national teams would be under the tutelage to newly hired American coaches Albert Sokaitis (head coach) and his assistant Jacques Sconiers.
“The teams will be under the American trainers, but the selection will be done by a panel of four Tanzanian coaches who will later assist the former to ensure that our teams perform well in the Zone Five tournament,” he said.
However, Sokaitis and Sconiers have yet to jet into the country as planned earlier, but Magesa promised that the duo would arrive early next month.
The Americans will team up with Evarist Mapunda, Leonard Kwale, Agnella Semwaiko and Bahati Mgunda to train the teams assignment that promises to be tough.
The Zone Five championship has already attracted teams from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Somalia, Burundi, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Egypt, Sudan and South Sudan.
