NIGERIA : 12 Nigerians Begin FIBA Zonal Referees Course

At least 12 Nigerian basketball referees, a Ghanaian and Togolese are undergoing a FIBA Zonal Referees course in Lagos.
The course, which is being conducted by Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) in collaboration with FIBA Africa which nominated Egyptian Referee Instructor Shazly Muhamed Hassan to conduct the course at the National Stadium, Lagos.
Speaking at the occasion, Nigeria Basketball Federation President, Tijjani Umar noted that the course provides Nigeria with an opportunity to increase the number of FIBA-graded referees who could in turn help improve the basketball leagues and game locally and continue the good job that pioneers like the late Chris Obojememe started.
He said it is also a much-needed boost for referees in Zone 3 comprising 8 countries in the West African sub-region.
In another development, the Nigeria Basketball Federation has confirmed that the National Division 1 League, which is the qualification tournament for promotion to the Nigerian Basketball Premiership will now hold in the Sports Hall, National Stadium, Package 'B', Abuja October 14-20, 2012.
The tournament was earlier to be hosted by the Benue State Basketball association in Makurdi, but funding challenges forced the association to request for postponement which the NBBF declined.
Some of the teams expected include Zuma Rocks, Abuja, Benue Braves and Oluyole Warriors, Ibadan.
One team each from the Atlantic and Savannah conferences is to be promoted to take the place of demoted Chariots Basketball Club and Defenders Club (Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps) respectively in the 2012/2013 season of the Dstv Premier Basketball League.
